Create beautiful, loose curls quickly and easily with straighteners. Ideal for finishing a half up half down bridal hair-do or a quick fix for last minute hairstyle for the flower girls!

Personally I love using my Babyliss hair straighteners, as they are both good quality and they leave hair with a lovely, smooth finish without snagging. And what’s more, they won’t break the bank!

We have a great ‘quick straightener curl’ tutorial on our online bridal hair style course, which takes you step by step though how to prep the hair before going on to create beautiful curls.

Bridal hairstyling practice head

Practice Makes Perfect. . . To get the best out of your bridal hairstyle training course It is worth spending money on a good quality practice head and you need 100% human hair.

We recommend a medium or high density practice head, with hair no shorter than 12-14 inches for your bridal hairstyling kit.

We want to help you get the right bridal hairstyling kit, so we’ve searched around for great quality practice heads for your bridal hairstyle/hair-up practice.

If I had to choose my favourite bridal hair practice head from our selection of manikin heads in our bridal hairstyle shop, it would be this one

I love it because the hair has different tones in it, and as a result, your hairstyles look fab in photos. It also has plenty of hair – and it has shoulders – so it looks a bit more realistic!

Having said that, the practice heads on this site will blow your mind!!!

The have some truly beautiful practice heads,`so you’re going to be spoilt for choice!

This may seem like an odd one, but staying well organised will make your life as a pro bridal hairstylist so much easier!

Try the Fox Range Stack N Store 16 Compartment Box

The best one I’ve found is the large / shallow size available at numerous fishing tackle suppliers online – you can find them here: www.harrissportsmail.com

Hair grips/Bobby pin Sizes

  • 3 cm, 4.5 cm and 6 cm

  • Fine – approx. 4-4.5 cm

Suppliers of hair pins & grips

You can get them in our SHOP and also from Inca uk & Banbury Postiche (always buy hair pins with tips on the end so they don’t scrape along your clients scalp!)

The essentials

Prep, Prime & Setting Lotions – Schwarzkopf Silhouette style & care lotion and Schwarzkopf Silhouette setting lotion/Pump Spray

Salt Sprays

L’Oreal Texture spray and Fudge Urban Sea Salt Spray

Curl creams

We love  L’Oreal Liss Control and Boots Essentials Curl Cream – great for smoothing out slightly more stubborn curls!

Goldwell Style Superego Cream you need this in your kit – fabulous for beautiful textured styles

Texturising Powder – Great for adding texture, volume and body to the hair. Dust It by Schwarzkopf and Big Sexy Hair Powder Play are a couple of the best one I’ve found.

Hair spray – You’ll need a hair spray that brushes out easily – it should be flexible on the hair so you can try different looks easily. We recommend Elnett Professional Hair Spray – regular hold – available at most beauty wholesalers. Also try Osis Session 3 – a great dry hair spray that is super strong but not heavy. It is good as a finishing spray.

Avoid regular Elnett available at most chemists and supermarkets as it can be quite wet and has a tendency to make the hair crispy.

Mousse – a medium or firm hold mouse will do the trick.

Naturally curly hair is awesome, not scary and don’t you forget it! If you feel more than a little daunted at the prospect of having to work with a client’s naturally curly hair, you’re not alone. Most bridal hair stylists live in fear of having to adapt their styling skills to suit a full head of curls, but with the right tricks and techniques you need not be afraid.

Curly hair is gorgeous and your clients who have been blessed with it should always be encouraged to embrace those curls, rather than shy away from them, so it’s time to get to grips with your curly hair styling skills!

Here at Create Beautiful Hair, we know that facing those hairstyling fears can be a challenge, but if you tackle it head on you’ll soon forget why you were so worried about it in the first place.

We always make sure to cover how to style curly hair on our 2 day and 4 day bridal hair styling courses and Pam has created a number of fantastic online tutorials on this subject for you to work with in your own time too.

Choose the Right Products

Selecting the perfect products to work with curly hair is a must – there’s no winging it in this department. You want a product that will help to create definition, hold and shine without being crunchy, frizzy or weighing down but without a lot of trial and error, this is easier said than done.

Fortunately for you, with Pam’s 25+ years of experience working as a bridal hair stylist for many a curly haired bride, she’s done that trial and error for you!

You’ll be pleased to hear that the best products aren’t always the most expensive ones – Pam loves Boots Essentials curl crème for creating smooth, beautiful curls with great hold and at only £1.99 a tub, you can’t go wrong! Having the right tools to work with naturally curly hair is imperative if you want great results – you can’t make do when it comes to this tricky hair type.

Just because hair is curly, don’t be fooled into thinking you won’t need your tongs, because for flawless curls these are invaluable. If your client’s curls are looking a little too wild and frizzy a small sized curling tong can save the day – even just a handful of neatened up sections throughout can work wonders.

You should always avoid using a hairbrush on curly hair and instead, try a wide tooth comb or tangle teaser, if you’ve got some nasty knots to deal with.

Embrace Volume

If you get the pleasure of working with a head of natural curls in 2017, embrace the volume because it’s very in! Often people with curly hair are desperate to flatten it down and neaten it up, but more often than not, they will look so much better if you try the ‘go big or go home’ attitude.

You’ll have seen from our recent blog ‘Oscars Red Carpet Bridal Hair & Makeup Inspiration for 2017’ that Halle Berry has been rocking the natural look with her big, volumised curls and looks amazing!

Hydrate!

One of the most common problems when it comes to curly hair is lack of moisture in those locks. Your curly haired client might need a little help in this department, so make sure that the products your use are moisturising and if you need a bit of a shine boost, don’t be afraid to use a touch of serum or curl oil once you’re done styling. Be careful not to overdo it though – start with a tiny amount and build up as necessary.

Don’t Fear Backcombing

Backcombing looks scarier than it actually is – honest! If you do it right, you’re not going to ruin your client’s hair and it can make all the difference to a finished style.

One of the main things that you want to think about with fine hair is how to add in that extra volume without going crazy on the products and backcombing is a great way to do this. Just a little bit of teasing at the roots can go a long way in really plumping up a style and it will help your grips to stay put too!

Go Easy on the Product

It’s way too easy to overdo it with product on fine hair, leaving it looking limp and greasy, which is the last thing your client is going to want on her wedding day! You’re going to want to use some products such as hairspray and perhaps a dry shampoo or texturizer but steer clear of anything too heavy and instruct your client to not use any product on their hair before coming to you.

Do Use Hairspray

Just because you need to use products with caution doesn’t mean that fine hair doesn’t need it. If you’re curling very thin, fine hair using a great hairspray is essential, or those curls will be dropping out in five minutes!

Regular hairspray can be a bit too heavy to use in the amounts you’ll need for a good curl, even on thicker hair, but we love Elnett Professional hairspray which has a much finer mist. You can’t buy this from high-street shops so make sure that you stock up from hairstylist wholesalers.

Embrace Rollers

We’re big fans of heated rollers and on our wedding hairstylist course, we’ll teach you how to set them perfectly to create an ideal base for every style. Using heated rollers to prep the hair is a must, particularly for fine hair, as this will add much-needed volume that looks really lovely and natural before you even begin creating your style.

Switch the Parting

If you’re really struggling to get the lift you want in your client’s thin hair, one thing you can try is switching their parting up for one they wouldn’t normally wear. This is a sneaky trick can can instantly give roots a boost away from the scalp for a thicker appearance.

Use Extensions

As a wedding hairstylist, you’ve got to be able to give your client exactly what they want for their big day, so if they’ve got their heart set on a style that is better suited to longer, thicker hair don’t be afraid to use those hair extensions.
