Meghan and Harry may be settling in to their life together as a married couple, but we’re still thinking about that gorgeous wedding day look and we’re willing to bet that many brides-to-be all over the world will be too, for a very long time.

When a wedding a huge as this one hits our media, it’s up to us as bridal hairstylists and bridal makeup artists to be on the ball and have that look figured out to a tee, so when a bride asks you for something just like it (and at least one bride will ask you for something just like it, at some point!) you’ll be confident and raring to go.

We covered Meghan’s beautiful, barely-there makeup in a previous blog and today, we’re looking at that effortless hairdo. Soft, face-framing and ‘very girl next door’ with all the grace and sophistication expected of a Duchess – this is one style that we’re absolutely loving! As demonstrated, despite its casual air, it fits like a dream into a regal, cathedral setting but it would look equally appropriate at a laid back barn or back garden affair too.

The trick to achieving a look like this is not so much it getting the hair to look the way you want it, but rather, getting it to stay that way! Deliberately falling tendrils and a loose appearance takes some serious skill to style in way that keeps it looking just as fabulous by the end of the night as it does when the bride walks down the aisle.

To get you started though, here are the basics:

  1. To begin the style, you need to prep the base. For this you have two options: a glossy, bouncy blow dry (this is what Meghans hairstylist went for) or set the hair in heated rollers for lift and volume.
  2. Part the hair in the centre using your tail comb and pull back to the crown.
  3. Next, you want to add some loose waves through the hair using large barrel tongs (32mm). Make sure to wrap the hair loosely and alternate the direction to keep the curls looking natural and relaxed.
  4. Once you’ve achieved the desired movement and texture, pull the hair back into a tight, low ponytail at the nape of the head. Fix with hairspray.
  5. Twist sections of the hair around the ponytail to create the low bun. Loosely wrap these sections around the ponytail to create the voluminous undone bun.
  6. Finish by loosening up sections around the face for a really soft effect. Finish with your Elnett Professional hairspray.

With all that build up it’s hard to believe that the Royal Wedding has now been and gone! After much anticipation, Meghan Markle made her way down the aisle looking every inch as fabulous as expected and, much to our great delight, wearing pretty much exactly what Pam Wrigley said she would create for her wedding hair and makeup. Nailed it!

Whatever look she showed up sporting, it was always going to be the number one hot trend for brides to be all over the world for the foreseeable future, so just as well that it’s one we love. Her makeup was fresh and dewy, allowing those beautiful freckles to shine through and her hair (despite the complaints about a few stray fly-aways breaking the internet) was a glammed up version of her signature messy low bun.

OK, hands up who cried watching Meghan Markle walk herself down the aisle? Or was it that incredible Gospel rendition of Stand By Me that had you tearing up? Whatever got you, there’s no denying that Harry and Meghan’s wedding has almost certainly just broken some kind of record for being the most romantic royal wedding EVER. But as we’re all bridal hair stylists and makeup artists here, lets not pretend that Meghan’s look wasn’t the most important part of the day!

Pam totally nailed it in her predictions for Meghan’s royal wedding hair and makeup (as you can read in our blog here), saying that she would love to style her in a messy low bun and fresh, dewy makeup. Let’s look at a run-down of the royal wedding hair and makeup, as it appeared on the day…

The Royal Wedding: Meghan Markle’s Hair

The gorgeous Meghan is breaking tradition left right and centre! From the now forever famous first kiss on the steps outside the chapel to ensuring a star-studded guestlist and as it turns out, even her hairstyle went against the grain.

Many royal brides before Meghan, including Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth, have worn soft, flowing waves beneath a diamond tiara but Meghan went for a more polished version of a look we’ve seen her wearing a lot recently: a loose, low bun.

Famed hairstylist Serge Normant had exactly that same idea as Pam for Meghan’s hair (great minds think alike!) and the result was a fabulous yet surprisingly natural ‘girl-next-door’ style. There’s been an awful lot of fuss about those stray fly-aways at the front though – a little more hairspray next time, Serge!

But fly-aways or not, this laissez-faire bun looked stunning to us (in fact, the loose, face-framing front kind of added to the charm of the day) and we’re sure to see a lot of brides in 2018 and for many years to come wanting something similar – so get practicing.

Makeup

Staying right on trend, Meghan’s royal wedding makeup including the super-hot grey smoky eye – the perfect way to add a little bit of sex appeal to a bride without being too obvious. Her makeup artist and friend Daniel Martin did this perfectly, keeping the eye-shadow relatively light to be able to get away with some seriously fluttery lashes and ‘face-anchoring’ brows.

Meghan’s skin was kept just as she likes it: fresh and natural enough to see her amazingly cute freckles showing through. Just like Pam said, that pop of pink on the cheeks was present and a peachy, pale pink lip finished the look.

Nails

We had to give a mention to the nails, purely because of the story behind them. Did you know that royals are only allowed to wear certain shades of polish chosen by the queen? And guess what, it’s a steal at £7.99!

Meghan wore the same pink Essie Ballet Slipper nail varnish that has been worn by royal brides for decades and that the queen has worn every day for 30 years.

Bridal Makeup for 2018: The Create Beautiful Hair Favourites

We all love a royal wedding and with Harry and Meghan’s big day coming up fast we can’t stop thinking about that all-important bridal hair & makeup.

Will she be keeping it relaxed and natural with her signature messy bun and smoky charcoal eyes? Will she follow in Kate’s footsteps and opt for a romantic half up half down do (complete with tiara, of course!)? This gorgeous girl can do no wrong when it comes to hair and makeup, so whatever it ends up being, we know she’ll look incredible.

But that doesn’t stop us dreaming ‘what if Pam Wrigley got to be the royal hair stylist?’…

Whilst we adore Kate Middleton’s chic style, there’s no denying that Meghan does things just a little bit edgier.

Wearing ripped jeans for her first public appearance with Harry and even opting for mis-matched earrings at one royal engagement, she’s certainly shaking things up a bit at Buckingham Palace and we totally dig her for it. This just makes the bridal hair and makeup predictions all the more exciting – will she go traditional like all other royal brides before her or are we going to see something completely new?

She can certainly carry off both beautifully, but here are the looks Pam would LOVE to see Meghan rocking down that aisle:

If Pam had the chance, she would embrace Meghan’s cool style, allowing her to really shine through as herself and not just go along with royal trends:

 

“I would love to style a messy low bun for Meghan. Loads of texture, gorgeous root lift and making the most of her natural wave.”

 

Despite becoming a princess, Pam would also choose to steer Meghan away from the more traditional tiara and again, make the added sparkle her own:

 

“I’m crossing my fingers Meghan won’t go for the usual tiara! As a finishing touch, I would pin in some fabulous sparkly diamonds for extra gorgeousness. There are so many beautiful things you can make with diamonds that a tiara just seems so ordinary.”

When it comes to Meghan’s bridal makeup, it would be hard to go wrong. That radiant, dewy glow she’s so well-known for comes naturally (she attributes that to internal mouth massage and Manuka honey with EVERYTHING), so we’re already working with a lovely base.

 

“I’d love to give Meghan fresh, fabulous makeup – dewy and gorgeous with golden highlights on the cheek and a barely-there blush. Perfect for a late spring wedding.”

 

But just as with the hairstyle, Pam would make sure to keep Meghan’s look just a little bit edgy:

 

“For her eyes, I think perhaps a soft golden shimmer on the lid, with a bit of an eyeliner to give the look a bit of an edge. And for the lips: a bold version of nude, if there is such a thing!”

 

The trick, of course, is to bring out her best features and make sure she looks as good on camera as in real life. Pam says:

 

“With all the cameras, she might need a bit more oomph. Smoky charcoal grey would definitely do the trick! I’d also go for individual lashes – nothing too much, just subtle definition and same for the brows: gently does it!”
