Red Carpet Hairstyles – Get the look: Bella Thorne Fishtail Updo

We love the glamour of an updo and are always looking for something a little bit different, so Bella Thorne’s fishtail braid chignon has left us more than inspired. From the front it appears to be a classic chignon, but from behind you can admire the intricate braiding. This look is easier to create than you would think and it is perfect for evening wear or even as a bridal updo.

Step one:

To get the best results you need to make sure that you hair is completely free from any knots so give it a thorough brush through first. You can either start with freshly washed and dried hair or use a touch of dry shampoo on your roots to freshen up.

Step two:

Begin by splitting your hair down the centre parting. You want to start with the right hand section of hair so tie up the left hand side to keep it out of the way.

Step three:

With the right hand side of hair divide this in two. To create the fishtail braid hold a section in each hand and then pull a small amount loose from the right side and pass it to the left. Now do this from the left side to the right and keep doing this until you reach the bottom. Secure in place with a clear hair elastic.

Step four:

Now you can release the hair that you tied up on the left hand side of your head and repeat the previous step on it.

Step five:

With both braids now completed you can entwine them around each other, twisting upwards into a chignon. Secure in place with bobby pins. Once both braids are complete, twist them around each other and upward into a chignon at the back of your head.

Step six:

Pull out a few pieces of hair around your face to create a romantic frame and then mist over with hairspray to create hold.

French Plait Braided Red Carpet Hairstyle – Get the look: Amanda Seyfried

Having been around forever you would think that braids must be on their way out, but then we see Amanda Seyfried at the premiere of ‘While We’re Young’ and we remember why we love them so much. This youthful look can be hard to pull off but it works brilliantly paired with Amanda’s Valentino dress and smokey eye makeup, resulting in a sophisticated and structured look.

Here’s how to get the look

Step one:

Wash, condition and blow dry your hair to start. If you don’t have time to wash your hair then a great tip is to mist over a product like a foundation mist which will revitalise you look. Follow this up by blow drying and brushing hair to refresh it for that just washed look.

Step two:

Make a clean centre parting from the top of your head right down to the nape of your neck so that your hair is split into two sections. Apply some molding wax to the sections to give your hair added texture and hold.

Step three:

You can now start to French braid one side of your hair. Begin with a section about a quarter to half an inch size. Make sure that you pull the hair tightly as you braid down the head, increasing the size of the section as you go. When you reach the bottom secure the end with a clear hair band.

Step four:

Take the end of the braid and roll it up into the desired shape and when you are happy with it fix it in place using bobby pins. You can now repeat the steps on the other side of the head.

Step five:

To make sure that the style stays in place spray over it with some strong hold hairspray.

Create Beautiful Hairstyles – Get the look: Elizabeth Banks Double Bun

We have just found the perfect spring style having spotted Elizabeth Banks at the ‘Resident Advisors’ premiere rocking a cute double bun. This style is great because it is so versatile; you can wear it day to day, to a festival, or even to that special occasion.

Get the look

Step one:

Wash and condition your hair as normal before applying a small amount of mousse to your roots. Blow dry hair using a rounded brush, focusing on producing lift at the roots.

Step two:

Next, create a deep side parting on the left hand side of your head. Take your curling tongs and loosely curl two inch sections of hair with a large barrel. Make sure that you leave hair to cool before gently brushing through it so that it has a wavy appearance. Curling beforehand also helps when it comes to forming the buns.

Step three:

Pull hair backwards leaving out a small section at the front which should have a gentle wave to it giving it the look of a soft side fringe. With the rest of your hair split it in two sections so that you have a top and bottom half. Start by pinning the top section out of the way.

Step four:

Take hold of the hair in the bottom sections and twist it up to form a donut bun at the nape of your neck and use pins to hold it in place. Now you can release hair in the top section and do the same again, positioning the bun so that it sits on top of the one you have just created. Again, when you are happy pin it in place.

Step five:

To make sure that everything stays in place mist over hair with a touchable hold hairspray.

Try the trend: Feather Hair Extensions

Back in 2011 feather extensions were all the rage, and now they have been brought back by Shailene Woodley. For the premiere of Insurgent Shailene wore a beautiful Ralph Lauren gown and rocked a sleek crop which looked polished from the front, but when she turned her head she displayed caramel striped feathers. The feathers, which were tucked into her hair, added an edge to her classic look. This fresh take on an old trend is set to become very popular particularly among festival goers as they replace the flower crown.

Important points to remember:

1. If you have curly hair you should get curly feather extensions, as a straight extension will not blend with the rest of your hair, you don’t want it to stick out like an afterthought. This also goes for those of you who have straight hair, make sure you have straight feathers.

2. Select a colour that contrasts with your hair, so like Shailene if you are brunette you should go for a lighter or darker red or caramel. Blondes would do best to go for brown or grey shades.

3. Choose where to put them carefully. Placing the feather in the outer top layer of your hair will result in a look that is probably best suited to a young teenager. Instead create a more discrete look by adding the extensions in the underneath layer of your hair towards the nape of your neck which will look much more understated.

4. Think about using removable feather extensions. If you work in a professional office environment it may not be appropriate to go in rocking this hippie style. Removable extensions are also a great way to see if you like the look and they give you more flexibility than if you were to have extensions bonded to your hair. A clip in feather extension is also more likely to be cheaper.

Get the look: Kate Middleton’s pretty ponytail

Kate Middleton looked as stylish as usual during her visit to the Turner Contemporary Gallery earlier this month. Pregnant with her second child, she showed off her baby bump in a cheetah print dress whilst her hair was in a messy, volumised ponytail – the ideal hairstyle for this season. Perfect for both work and weekends, it can be achieved in just ten minutes. You can also add accessories like a pretty headband to dress up the look for date or special occasion.

Get the look

Step one:

Wash and condition your hair with volumising shampoo, making sure that you thoroughly rinse your hair. Apply some mousse to your roots before blow drying your hair. It is easier to work your way around your head if you first divide hair into sections.

Step two:

Now that your hair is dry, lightly run over the ends with hair straighteners to create a smooth finish. Avoid going over your roots as you will only flatten out the volume that you have just put in. Flip your hair upside down and comb through from underneath to again achieve more volume.

Step three:

Flip your hair back the right way and pull hair back using just your fingers to form a ponytail. Avoid using a brush for this as you don’t want to flatten your locks or create a look that is too precise. The idea is to have a slightly messy finish. Secure the ponytail using a hair elastic.

Step four:

Take a small section of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the hair elastic to conceal it. Fix this in place with a bobby pin.

Step five:

Use a touch of invisible oil to make any flyaways disappear, and avoid the stickiness and smell of hairspray. If you prefer to use hairspray then go for a product with light hold as you don’t want hair to have a rigid, crispy look.

Get the look: January Jones – Create Soft, Vintage Hollywood Waves

For the premiere of ‘The Last Man on Earth’ last month January Jones sported a rather unique look which is perfect for turning heads on a night out. The left side had soft waves cascading to her shoulder where as the right was tied back out of the way in a slicked back style which gave a clean, modern, asymmetric feel.

Here’s how to get the look

Step one:

Wash and condition your hair as normal and then leave it to air dry naturally. Take your volumising spray and mist it at the roots, on the top, and at the sides of your hair. Use a boar bristle brush and your hair dryer to smooth along the hairline and add in some extra volume at the roots.

Step two:

Now you can create a deep side parting on the right side of your head. You can also part from just behind your left ear, over to the deep side parting. Clip up the section that you have just created at the top left side of your head.

Step three:

With the rest of your hair gather it all up into a sleek bun just under the crown. When you are happy with the position of the bun you can use hairpins to secure it in place. Use a small amount of glossing cream to smooth over any flyaways for a clean look.

Step four:

Unclip the section of hair at the top left side of your head. Use a ¾ inch curling tong and take hold of one inch sections of hair creating pin curls. Leave your hair to completely cool so that the curls are set. Gently brush the hair downwards towards your face so that you create a deep wave effect that is soft and smooth.

Step five:

Finish off by spritzing over your hair with hairspray to keep everything in place.

Get the look: Gigi Hadid – Red Carpet Hair & Makeup

Gigi Hadid arrived at the 2015 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue celebration in New York City earlier this month rocking a super slick style. Her hairstylist took inspiration from Gigi’s outfit which was sporty yet feminine, so they chose hair which looks tight on the sides giving a clean look, yet it still had volume on the top.

Get the look

Step one:

Take freshly washed hair and divide hair into sections. Start at the nape of the neck and apply mousse, making sure that you focus on the roots so they have extra grip to hold the style. Now you can blow dry your hair trying to keep it flat to your head shape.

Step two:

Next, you can repeat step one but with another section until you reach the front of the head. With the front sections apply twice as much mousse, mainly on the sides, and blow dry using a flat brush.

Step three:

When your reach the top of your head blow dry your hair with a round brush as you want to create volume here. Now apply a small amount of heat protection product from the mid shaft of your air to the ends and then use hair straighteners on this area so that hair lays smooth.

Step four:

Now that the ends are smooth spray strong hairspray to the sides of your hair, doing one side at a time. Use the flat brush to smooth hair backwards and follow the shape of your head. Do the same with the other side.

Step five:

Next, spray the top of your head lightly but do not brush it as you want to keep as much volume in as possible.

Step six:

If you are preparing this look for a night out then you can use large clips with little pieces of paper towel underneath them to hold the sides of your hair in place until you are ready to go out. Just remember to remove them when you leave!

Get the look: Allison Williams – Faux Bob Tutorial – Create Red Carpet Hairstyles

Allison Williams has been popping up more and more this season, providing us with some of the hottest red carpet looks. One of our favourites has to be when she arrives at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards on 11th January sporting a stylish, retro look. Allison exuded old Hollywood glamour and definitely stood out from the crowd with her nostalgic look which consisted of a faux bob and smokey eye shadow. While her makeup and skin looked absolutely beautiful, it is her faux bob that we are particularly keen on emulating, so read on for our step by step guide to creating this retro look.

Get the look

Step one:

Shampoo and condition your hair as normal before applying a small amount of volumiser. Make sure that when you apply it that you evenly distribute it throughout your hair.

Step two:

Now you can take some curl enhancing mousse and work this through your hair from the roots to the tips. Create a deep side parting, making the line as straight and clean as possible before blow drying your hair using a fine tooth comb.

Step three:

Start with the top of your head and take medium sections of hair, curling them towards your face.

Step four:

With bobbypins you can fix each individual curl flat on your head and then mist over with a touch of finishing spray.

Step five:

When your hair has cooled you can remove all of the pins and gently brush out the lengths.

Step six:

Next, you can shape the waves using some finishing spray and a little shine pomade which will stop any flyaways.

Step seven:

Now with your bobbypins curl the bottom of your hair up and under to create the bob shape. This can then be fixed in place.

Step eight:

Finish off by spritzing over hair with some light hold hairspray and some shine spray so that you look red carpet ready.

Get the look: Lilly James – Red Carpet Hair & Makeup Tutorials

With the braided hair trend still very popular this season we couldn’t ignore Lilly James and her stunning loose braid for the premiere of ‘Cinderella’ at the start of the month. It is a look that can be adapted to any occasion as Lilly manages hair with an elegant yet relaxed style for the red carpet.

Get the look

Step one:

Wash and condition your hair as normal and then while it is still damp apply some sea salt texturising spray all over your head. This step is particularly important as it is necessary to create a textured base so that your hair is easy to work with for the following steps. You can now blow dry your hair as normal.

Step two:

With hair that is now completely dry you can add a few more sprays of your texturising product as you comb back the front sections of your hair.

Step three:

Now, create a French braid beginning at the crown of your head and stopping half way down your hair, so that you have only touch the top half of your hair. With the three sections of hair you were using to make the braid, tuck these under to form a messy bun. Secure the bun in place with either a clear hair band or bobby pins.

Step four:

With the bottom half of your hair you can now create a messy fishtail braid, and again secure this with a clear hair band at the end. Pull out the braid slightly so that it appears thicker.

Step five:

The idea with this look is for it to be messy so resist the temptation to make each section look perfect. When you have finished mist over with a touch of hairspray to make sure that the style stays in place.

Best Dressed: Oscars 2015 – Red Carpet Hair & Makeup Styles

We have been waiting in anticipation for the Oscars, dubbed ‘the most glamorous night of the year’. Hollywood really ups the style stakes and shows us what they are made of and we were not disappointed.

We have put together our list of who was best dressed; take a look to see who made the cut.

Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Pike stunned us in so many ways. The “Gone Girl” actress arrived in a show stopping red gown by Givenchy and her overall look was flawless. From its figure hugging design to Rosamund’s sophisticated up do and classic makeup, she really got it spot on.

Reese Witherspoon

Now Reese’s outfit was hardly all singing all dancing but it was definitely one of the most elegant outfits of the night. Proving that you do not have to go over the top to stand out Witherspoon went for a fitted Tom Ford gown with a classic monochrome combination. She really showed that less is more, even when it came down to her relaxed hair style.

Emma Stone

We were unsure what exact shade Emma’s Elie Saab dress is, but it would seem that chartreuse is the correct way to describe it, and it looks surprisingly good on redheads. The long sleeves of the gown are balanced out with sheer detailing and a thigh high slit. Where many would have gone for a nude lip colour to match this ensemble, Emma packed a serious punch with her bold lipstick.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita is normally associated with colour on the red carpet but this white Calvin Klein gown looks amazing on her. The dress features a staggering 6,000 pearls making sure that it is dripping in glamour. We would imagine that this embellishment makes the gown pretty heavy to walk in!

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick has been popping up on our best dressed lists more and more and she wowed us with her custom pink Thakoon gown. We love the neckline of the dress combined with the pretty cut out detail. Her classic up do was the perfect addition to this simple yet stylish look.
