We know that there are many would-be bridal hairstylists out there with amazing potential who aren’t able to make it to LondonManchester or Birmingham to train with us. Wedding Hairstylist Must-Haves: Tools & Products You NEED in Your Kit!

wedding hairstylist can only do so much without an amazing kit to help create those gorgeous styles, but with so many choices of products and tools out there it can be hard to know where to begin. Messing up on buying those all-important essentials can be a costly and time-consuming error, so aside from your pins, grips, tail comb and padding, we thought that we’d share a few of Pam’s absolute must-have items to set you on the right track.

Wedding Hairstylist Products

TIGI Catwalk Curlesque Curls Rock Amplifier

For curls that rock, look no further than this incredible product – a firm favourite of Pam’s for smooth, frizz-free curls with perfect definition that lasts.

Boots Essentials Curl Cream

Price isn’t always everything: This product has been around for ages and for a bargainous £1.99, you really can’t go wrong – so stock up! This curl crème is ideal for smoothing out curls that are a bit more stubborn than your average.

Dust It by Schwarzkopf

Dry shampoo isn’t just for bad hair days, it’s also brilliant for creating beautiful volume at the roots and great texture throughout. If you’re struggling to get a grip to stay put on extra silky hair, a quick dusting of this should sort you out. Although this is an awesome product, it’s not so brilliant on dark hair as it can show up in an ashy tone. Label.M Brunette Resurrection Style Dust is Pam’s go-to alternative for brunettes and raven haired beauties.

wedding hairstylist

Elnett Professional Hair Spray

Note the ‘professional’ here – you are a wedding hairstylist after all! This is not your standard Elnett hairspray that you can pick up from chemists and supermarkets. Unlike the highstreet product, which has a tendency to be a bit too wet and crispy for flawless styling, this pro version is available at most beauty wholesalers. Go for regular for a natural looking hold.

Wedding Hairstylist Tools

Babyliss Pro Heated Rollers (x2!)

Pam always uses Babyliss Pro heated rollers on the Create Beautiful Hair Bridal Hair Courses to create the dream foundation for any style. They’re easy to use, quick to heat up and cool down and they will give every style the perfect volume and root lift from the get-go.

Buy two kits and always bring both with you – this way you’ll never not have enough rollers and you can be heating more up as you work. If you need extra, individual rollers, you can buy those too.

Diva Wands

Creating all sorts of different curls and waves is a cinch with your trusty tongs and wands, but which size should you get? Pam always recommends that her students invest in 19mm & 25mm tongs and 25mm-13mm wand. Diva wands are an excellent brand and as an added bonus, they all come with heat proof gloves which is an invaluable bit of kit for a wedding hairstylist.

GHDs or Coroliss Straightening Iron

Quick and easy ringlets for flower girls or the tool of choice for smooth and sleek styles, there’s a reason that GHDs are so popular – they really are fantastic! Coroliss is another, lesser known brand that makes superb straighteners and these are actually Pam’s number one choice and what she uses on her own brides.

Boar Bristle & Nylon Hair Brush

A regular, plastic brush won’t cut it if you want to keep your styles perfect and free from flyaways. Whether you go for a classic Mason Pearson or a budget (but almost as good!) version by Sonia Kashuk or Denman, make sure that it’s aa boar bristle and nylon mix, for the smoothing and detangling action in one.

wedding hairstylist

Fishing Tackle Box

Not strictly a tool but definitely something worth a mention – where are you supposed to keep all of your black, brown and blonde pins and grips? In a fishing tackle box of course!

This is one of Pam’s top tips of the trade and how she keeps all of her bits and bobs really organised – a must when you’re keeping to a strict wedding timetable.

Party Season ‘How To’: Looped Braids Boho Updo

Party season is well and truly underway, so it’s time to get yourself well acquainted with some of the hottest looks out there for the coming months. Whether your clients are Halloween party goers; wanting to look their very best for Christmas or New Year or winter brides, having great hair is a must across the board, whatever the celebration.

To get you going with your party season styles, we’ve put together a step-by-step ‘how to’ guide for creating one of the most popular looks of the moment: Looped Braids Boho Updo!

Love this style and want to learn more? Sign up to our online course for 100s of full length video tutorials with bridal hair expert Pam Wrigley.

PARTY SEASON

Prep the hair and set in rollers for beautiful movement throughout the style and elegant root lift. Read all about the hair prepping techniques you can learn with us online, here.

Follow our step-by-step ‘How-To’ guide…

Step 1 / Part the hair in the centre and draw out a few pieces to frame the face for a soft look.

Step 2 / Gather a small section (about 2 inches) to the left of the parting and begin a regular Dutch braid.

Step 3 / Continue the braid but when you cross the right over the middle strand pick up a new, small section of hair along the and cross it into the braid.

Step 4 / Cross the left over the middle as usual and then again, bring the right strand across and bring in a new section of hair.

Step 5 / Repeat this two more times until you have four new pieces brought into your braid.

party season

Step 6 / ‘Seal’ this waterfall braid (which is what you’ve now created!) with a single ‘stich’ of your regular Dutch braid again.

Step 7 / Continue the braid, crossing the left over the middle and this time pick up a new section on the left side but underneath the braid rather than on top as before and bring it into the braid to create your first loop.

Step 8 / Repeat this process twice, bringing in a new section of hair to the left of the first looped piece, again the the second and then finally to the third.

Step 9 / Finish the braid out in a Dutch braid and then gently back-comb the end of the braid to hold it closed, or if you prefer, tie with a clear elastic.

Step 10 / Create an identical braid on the other side of the parting and then bring your finished braids around the head to the back, pull open a small gap in the end stitch and move the left braid through the right braid. Secure with grips using Pam’s ‘up and over technique for a style that won’t budge!

party season

Want bigger braids for this party season style? Now’s the time to loosen them out! Gently pull at the sections to open the braid up and make them more noticeable.

If you love this style as a half up, half down do – stop here. If you want to carry on and create an amazing updo…keep going!

Step 11 / Bring the loose hair that has been left down into a ponytail and tie with a clear elastic at the point where you would like to create your messy bun.

Step 12 / On the last loop of tying the ponytail, pull the hair halfway through to create a bun.

Step 13 / Take small sections from the top of the bun shape you have created, bring them up towards the head and secure into place with Kirby grips.

Step 14 / Finally, use the fanned ends of the hair that have been left out of the bun by tucking them into the hair band underneath each of the pinned sections.

How to Nail Your Bridal Hair & Makeup Trial Run Every Time

Before you actually hit the ground running as a bridal hair & makeup artist, it would be easy to think that being successful and having a diary full of booked clients comes down entirely to your practical skill, but as with any career involving working with people, it’s the way that you treat your clients, communicate and go the extra mile that will make the difference between you and the next stylist.

Of course, skill is paramount and you need to be ready to create that dream style for your bride (which is why, on all of our Bridal Hair Courses, we’ll teach you the techniques to be able to produce ANY style!) but you’re never going to get to that point if you don’t take the steps to ensure that your trial run is a huge hit.

As a bridal hair & makeup artist, you only get one shot at proving that you are the one for the job above all others, so before you have your next trial run, make sure that you’re clued up on how to nail it, every time.

Prep the Bride

Communication is key when it comes to being an amazing bridal hair & makeup artist and this should start before you even meet your client…

From the first point of contact, it’s on you to not only make sure that your bride-to-be feels special and well taken care of, but that she also feels prepared for the upcoming trial run. It’s not just you who feels the pressure of getting this right – she’s eager to find that dream look too!

To effectively prep your bride, you need to fill her in on all the things she can do in advance to help her feel ready when you finally meet.

Laying some ground rules on how she should arrive with dry, product-free, un-styled hair preferably washed the night before will make your life a lot easier!

bridal hair

Ask your bride to have a think about what’s important to her – what she loves and wants to show off and what she’s not so keen on and wants to disguise or work around. Let her know that you don’t expect her to arrive knowing exactly what she wants (this is something you’ll figure out together) and not to stress if she’s totally clueless. She wants to know that she’s in good hands as well as being part of the process.

Talk & Listen

When the day of the trial finally arrives, you might be brimming with ideas that you would love to bring to life on your bride and that’s great! But don’t be pushy.

It’s a fine line between making expert suggestions and recommendations for looks that you think will look beautiful (which is usually welcomed!) and making a bride feel as though she doesn’t really have a say in the finished result.

Listen to her responses as you talk and as you work with both your ears and your eyes – often body language speaks much louder than words.

To be a great bridal hair & makeup artist, you need to be a great listener. Talk to your client about everything, not just her hair and makeup, as her overall plans for her big day should impact the style you discover together for her as much as anything else.

Be Prepared (With Pam in your Pocket!)

No bride wants a bridal hair & makeup artist who is unsure of themselves, so be confident by being well prepared.

Practice makes perfect, so work on your skills non-stop on the run up to your trials or attend one of our 2 Day Bridal Hair Courses to perfect your skills.

Our Online Bridal Hair Course is an invaluable tool for all bridal hair & makeup artists during a trial run, as you can watch our 100s of quick tip videos at any time and solve any number of issues in a instant. Keep your phone on you and if you find that you’re struggling to get a style to stay put, getting a curl to hold or any other problem you can nip to the loo and watch Pam take you through how to sort it, step by step, in just a minute or two!

Use Your Planner

You can now buy the bridal hair and makeup planners that Pam uses with her clients in our online shop!

As you’re working your way through the trial run, you absolutely must make notes so that when the wedding day comes around you can recreate the exact look that your client loved so much before, without having to try and remember which techniques or products you used off the top of your head. This will also help you to work out a timetable for the day so that you bride and the bridal party are all ready on time!

One of our online students, Natalie, has just started off on her bridal hair journey; recently completing her hair prep exam using tongs, straighteners and heated rollers.

As someone with no hairstyling experience before undertaking our online bridal hair course, Natalie demonstrates just how much you can learn in a short space of time…

Here are just some of the ‘basics’ available for you to learn, when you join our Online Bridal Hair Course

Getting Started…

How to Prep

Just like on our face-to-face courses, we’ve made sure to include plenty of full length tutorials that take you through everything you need to know when it comes to hair prep.

A style is only as good as it’s foundation, as far as we’re concerned, so it’s important to use excellent techniques from the get-go, not just when you get to ‘the main event’. No matter what your experience level, you’ll find our tutorials easy to follow and infinitely useful.

Even if you’re already a pro-hairstylist it’s a good idea to ‘go back to basics’ with our online bridal hair course because you’re bound to learn something new, thanks to Pam’s 25 years experience in the wedding industry.

Backcombing

Knowing how to backcomb correctly is an essential part of bridal hairstyling, as this will not only enable you to create fantastic volume and padding within styles without the need for donuts or hair extensions, but it will also help you to secure your grips in such a way that they just won’t budge!

Pam will take you through how to backcomb the hair in a simple, safe and effective way that won’t hurt your client’s scalp(!) and will give you exactly the effect you desire.

Smooth & Secure

It’s no good creating a gorgeous style that doesn’t last, so learning steadfast securing techniques is a must.

From Pam’s signature Create Beautiful Hair ‘up & over’ method to the ‘shake test’, our online bridal hair course will help you create bridal hairstyles that will look as great last thing at night as it does walking down the aisle.

Hair Extensions & Padding

On our online bridal hair course, Pam will introduce you to some of her favourite products and kit, including the best hair extensions and padding that she uses to create styles with her own brides.

You’ll discover how to utilise extensions and padding in the best way possible, maximising their potential for creating the most fabulous bridal hairstyles possible!

Expert Tips on How to Have an Amazing Bridal Hair Photoshoot

Now that you’re a trained and qualified Bridal Hair Stylist, it’s time to show your talent off to the world and what better way to do that then by taking part in some fantastic photoshoots?

If you’ve attended our 4-day Bridal Hair Course you’ll already be off to a head-start with fab images from our professional portfolio photoshoot on the final day, but whether or not you already have these starter images, you’re always going to need more as an up-to-date portfolio showcasing all of the latest looks is a huge selling point when it comes to getting work with new clients.

Not trained yet or need a refresh?

bridal hair

Every skilled Bridal Hair Stylist can get a photoshoot together without any expense if you arrange a shoot where the final images benefit everyone involved.

If you’ve never set up your own Bridal Hair photoshoot or been part of a professional set up then you might be feeling a little bit nervous and wondering what you need to do to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Here are a number of things to take into consideration before, during and after a shoot to better your chances of getting the results that you’re after and keeping everyone involved happy:

Find a GREAT Photographer

You won’t get far on a photoshoot without an awesome photographer, so the first thing you need to do is start pitching your idea to photographers you love who you think might want to be involved.

It’s unlikely that a high-end photographer who is already getting lots of work is going to want to take part in a job where they don’t get paid (although keep an eye on casting calls on websites like Model Mayhem, as you never know, you might come across a pro needing a hair stylist for a test!), but there are plenty of very talented photographers out there who, like you, are building their portfolio too.

Don’t settle for just anyone – if you don’t like their work, it’s unlikely you’re going to be happy with the end result of your photoshoot. Talk to photographers you work with on jobs and put your own casting calls up on talent scouting sites suggestive a TFP (time for print) collaboration.

Contact Suppliers

You’re not the only one looking for gorgeous photos of their work! From wedding dress designers to Milliners, if you have a talented photographer on board and a great idea for a shoot or an amazing location you can easily collaborate with all sorts of wonderful people who can take your portfolio shots to the next level.

Having your model(s) dressed for the part can make all the difference, so if you can get hold of some beautiful gowns and hair accessories to work into your looks in exchange for the suppliers getting to use the finished photographs too, all the better. Just be sure to take extra good care of anything you borrow and return it in a timely fashion so you stay in their good books!

bridal hairstylist hacks

Scout Locations

Studio shots are great, if you have access to a studio and your photographer has lights and backdrops that they can use. If you don’t have these extras, you might be better off having the photoshoot on location using natural light instead, in which case you need to find somewhere that will look fantastic as a backdrop for a bridal photoshoot.

If you know of a venue that you would love to use, you could always try your luck and ask if you can use it for free (they can only say no!), but failing that, consider themed gardens, abandoned buildings and depending on where you are, maybe even a castle! There are lots of ruins open to the public that would look wonderful in bridal photoshoots, but be prepared the reschedule or have somewhere else to go if the weather turns.

bridal hair

Know Your Styles

Even the most experienced Bridal Hair Stylists should plan ahead for photoshoots by looking at their model’s hair and figuring out which styles they’re going to create, in advance.

Start off with simple styles and build up to styles that need backcombing and structure, that way you’ll be able to create a variety of different looks for your model. CBH online students can watch Pam’s trial run tutorial to find out how to create 10 different looks in under 2 hours.

Find out more info here

Winging it on a photoshoot is a bad idea if you want to ensure that you get the chance to showcase your best work, so do your homework, practice and arrive prepared.

Don’t forget to adapt the styles to suit your models face shape – watch Pam’s quick video for help and advice.

Bridal Hairstylist Tips: How to Overcome Your Hairstyling Fears

Putting yourself out there and choosing to take on the world in your dream career as a Bridal Hairstylist is no mean feat – it takes courage to try something new for the beginners and strength and perseverance to take the opportunity to better yourself and expand your skill-set as a trained stylist.

Confidence is key when it comes to making it as a successful Bridal Hairstylist, but it’s not unusual for us to meet students who have real fears about embarking on a new career or giving it their all in their chosen profession as a Bridal Hairstylist.

Sign up to our Online Bridal Hair Course for ‘Quick Tips’ on the go!

“Thanks for all the help! I’ve been hairdressing for 25 years plus but I’ve always been terrified of Bridal Hair.

I started your online bridal hair course and just a few weeks in I’ve managed to do the hair for my daughters wedding! I’d never have been brave enough without this course. Thanks Again.” – Michelle Jones, CBH Online Student

All of our Bridal Hair Courses are tailored to suit everyone’s individual needs and by taking you through everything step-by-step, you can rest assured than upon completion of your chosen course you’ll be feeling ready to take on any style in any situation!

Even though all of our students come to us at different levels, we often hear the same fears over and over again, from taking on styling hair with a fringe to being equipped with the right products in your kit to meet your client’s needs and fix common problems.

The number one this to remember is: DONT PANIC!! Stay calm and refer to the ‘Quick Tips’ section of Create Beautiful Hair Online to get the answers you need, as you need them.

Fringes & Bangs

Don’t get caught up on what the models fringe looks on Instagram – just get it right for your client and take your time finding out what her hair wants to do.

Don’t fight the direction of the hair, work with it and allow the hair to ‘show you’ where it naturally wants to sit.

Hair Extensions & Instagram

Don’t feel intimidated by the impressive styles you see on Instagram!

90% of the styles you see on Instagram and Pinterest have been created using hair extensions and you can create them too with just a little bit of practice.

Tricks of the trade

It’s easy to create extra volume and oomph, so don’t worry if your client has thin or fine hair.

  • Use Donuts for extra volume when creating soft messy buns for short hair. When positioned correctly you won’t be able to see the padding at all.
  • American Dream and Hair Rehab supply excellent quality hair extensions and we always use them on our Bridal Hair Courses. Join one of our Bridal Hair Courses and get great discounts on any American Dream product!

Read what our students have to say!

I just wanted to share some of my success with you…

I use to struggle with the thought process to create a particular requested hairstyle, from people but with your help and easy to follow step by step guidance I feel that I am becoming more confident in myself and my own skills to get from A to B to Z…

I have more recently, seen a marked improvement in my hair styles and the overall end results and have even surprised myself! I DONT feel too overwhelmed anymore when presented with masses of hair with clients that can have over the top expectations…

I tend to feel more confident in creating the styles but also feel better equipped to be advising clients about what actually suits them better and what is achievable considering their own hair type etc.. (without the filters on Pinterest & instagram) lol…

So just wanted to say THANKYOU

Julia, June ’17

Create Beautiful Hair really stands out from the crowd in this respect – we want you to be 100% happy in the knowledge that our online bridal hair course is going to meet your needs, and from the feedback we’ve had from our students so far, it looks like we’re doing a pretty great job!

Our Online Bridal Hair Course

Want to know more about our online bridal hair course to figure out if it’s right for you? Here are a few frequently asked questions, with clear and thorough answers to help you decide:

Who is the course taught by?

Pam Wrigley is an award-winning bridal hairstylist with over 25 year’s experience; a pro-hair live speaker in London and Manchester; a regular featured hairstylist and makeup artist in magazines and blogs such as Vogue, Pro Hairdresser, Brides, Confetti and Wedding Planner and the founder and head trainer of Create Beautiful Hair.

Our in-depth, step-by-step tutorials are brought to you by Pam, who has designed the videos to be able to share her ground breaking bridal hairstyling techniques in a clear and concise way. We also have other expert team members in some videos, to bring you the very best of braids and blow-drying.

You will learn primarily from these video tutorials, but we also have an ‘Ask Pam’ feature, which enables you to send your questions and progress pics to Pam at any time throughout the course. Pam will then get back to you for 1-2-1 coaching – at no extra cost! You can also continue to learn casually and use this feature once you have completed the course, meaning that when you start working you’ll have Pam on hand to guide you.

What experience level is the course suitable for?

Our online bridal hair course is suitable for all experience levels – even those of you who feel totally clueless about proper hairstyling techniques. All we ask is that you love working with hair! You don’t need any existing qualifications to take part.

Whilst this is the case, don’t let this put you off if you are an experienced hairstylist looking at taking the course. The reason that our online bridal hair course is suitable for everyone is because we have hundreds of video tutorials available at varying levels of complexity.

We offer tutorials right from the beginning, showing how to correctly set rollers and how to prep the hair, right the way up to quite challenging hairstyles and advanced hairstyling techniques. If you are a pro hairstylist though, we do recommend that you watch our simpler tutorials too as the techniques that Pam uses are her own, developed over 25+ years of experience, and even advanced hairstylists often learn something new that completely changes their bridal hair game for the better!

Habia

Will I be qualified upon completion of the course?

Yes, you will! Our online bridal hair course is AQA accredited, meaning that upon successful completion you will have an internationally recognised achievement award and will be ready to start working with clients anywhere in the world!

If you’re worried about paying for the course but not managing to successfully complete it, don’t be. Pam is always there to help, so before you submit your final work, you can send it to Pam first so that she can advise you on any changes you might need to make. There’s no rush, we offer 6 and 12 month’s memberships which is loads of time to complete the course at a leisurely pace. If you do find that you need a bit more time when you reach the end of your membership, you can always extend with our great student discounts.
