Being a wedding hairstylist and working with brides is without a doubt one of the best jobs in the world. If you’re looking at our courses as a way to really kick start your career in the world of weddings, you’re making an excellent decision!

A wedding hairstylist is so much more than just that. If you’re not an experienced wedding hairstylist, you might be surprised to find that on the big day, the bride will look to you for more than just fabulous hair and makeup.

Bridal Hair Webinars

With so much competition in the wedding industry, it’s important to stand out from the crowd. You’ll be all set on creating gorgeous hairstyles and makeup looks after having attended our courses, but it is also a big part of your job to be able to take good care of your bride whilst you have her.

We know that there are many scenarios you might find yourself in and many questions that a wedding hairstylist might want to ask, which is why we offer the ‘Ask Pam’ tab as a part of our Habia endorsed online bridal hair course, so you can get in touch with Pam directly with any questions whenever you need to – even if it’s on the wedding day itself! There are also 100s of troubleshooting ‘quick tip’ videos for you to watch and learn from in your own time.

For those of you who haven’t signed up to our course yet to have access to all that and much more, we’ve put together 3 key pointers every great wedding hairstylist should know to really shine on the big day, whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned pro!

Listen with Your Eyes & Ears

During your bride’s trial day (which you absolutely must have with every client) you want to make sure that she goes away happy. No, more than happy – ecstatic! But just getting positive comments isn’t enough, as many clients will say that they’re pleased with the results even if they’re not, and if they get away without having found their perfect style the chances are that they’re not going to book you.

Just as important as talking to your client about all of their likes and dislikes is to watch their body language. If you’re paying attention, you’ll be able to pick up whether or not they really are thrilled with how their hair and makeup is looking, or if they’re just being polite.

Don’t be nervous and don’t be put off if they do tell you that they’re not happy – that’s exactly what you want. Clients are very rarely satisfied with the first look, and you shouldn’t be either. It can take a while to work out the kinks and get that perfect look. Ask questions to try and get them to tell you what they don’t like.

Keep Your Cool

Even if it’s your very first bride and you’re frantic with the pressure of their wedding day on your shoulders, don’t let it show!

Your bride is likely to be in a bit of a flap herself as you’re getting ready and it’s part of your job to keep her relaxed and together, so the last thing you can be is panicked.

Take a deep breath, remember that she has chosen you to be her wedding hairstylist because you’re talented and she loves your work, and know that you’ve got this! There will be times that you will inevitably come up against something that you don’t know the answer to, or that knocks your confidence a bit. Sign up to our online course so that you can have ‘Pam in your pocket’ to help you figure everything out.

Use Great Technique

It’s all very well and good creating a style that looks gorgeous, but it’s no good if it A. all falls out of places before your client is even ready to walk down the aisle or B. the hairstyle starts hurting her from being too tight or having poorly placed pins and grips.

You want your client to be over the moon with her final look long after you have left the building, not only because you will always want to give your brides the very best but also because of those all important positive online reviews, which in 2016 you absolutely need to pick up work.

Join us on one of our 2 day4 day or online bridal hair courses to find out how to create beautiful styles that last and stay comfortable, even when they’re loose and tousled or sleek and tight.

Heated rollers – if there’s one thing a bridal hairstylist needs in her arsenal, it’s these babies!

If you’ve ever attended one of our bridal hair courses, you’ll know that the first thing we cover is correct roller positioning for beautiful, bouncy curls. Even our students who have been styling hair for years find this incredibly useful as Pam’s special techniques, learned from over 20 years of creating beautiful hairstyles, allows for ease of use and gorgeous results every time.

Because we love heated rollers so much and we’re always recommending our favourites to our students, we’ve now started selling these in our shop, so you don’t need to go on the hunt for the very best – you can buy them straight from us!

Unless you’re used to using heated rollers, you might not be familiar with the effect or know why you need these in your bridal hairstyling kit for almost every style you will ever create. Regardless of whether you’re going for a curly style or a smooth and sleek look, heated rollers are the best way to give your client’s hair fabulous root lift and bounce, creating the perfect base for any style.

If you are using your heated rollers for the purpose of creating curls, it’s really important to get the positioning right so that they fall beautifully (get in touch for a Create Beautiful Hair roller setting plan). You can create different types of curls and waves too depending on how you lay the hair onto the roller – you can do a classic wind for a corkscrew curl, or a wind with a twist for more of a beachy wave.

Game of Thrones hair inspiration

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for years, you’re probably well aware that Game of Thrones hair inspiration is a pretty big deal – the fantastical, medieval toned dos have been consistently incredible for years.

If you haven’t noticed this, now is the time to! Lots of brides to be find wedding hair inspiration in their favourite TV shows and GoT is one of the hottest series out there. You’ll want to prepare yourself for the inevitability of being asked to create a ‘Khaleesi’ hairstyle at a trial at least once (and probably lots more than that!), or get yourself ready for next time you’re asked, if you’ve already had this posed to you and you weren’t sure what to do.

One of the most popular Game of Thrones hair inspiration looks is the Mother of Dragons multi-tiered braid style; so in today’s blog we are going to give you a quick ‘how-to’ on creating that look.

If you’re still stuck, sign up to our online bridal hair course so you can ‘Ask Pam’ and follow our detailed video tutorials! Better yet, learn all about braids on our 1 day intensive braiding course to really master this style.

Game of Thrones Hair Inspiration – Khaleesi Braids

Begin your style by creating the right foundation. This is the key to all great hairstyles and is something that we talk about a lot on our courses!

For Khaleesi braids, you’ll want to give the hair a bit of root lift and volume which can be pulled back in later; you’ll also want to have the hair looking as sleek and smooth as possible. Set the hair in rollers. Once these are done, you can begin your hairstyling.

  • Grab hold of about a two-inch section of hair on the front left of the head to create your first your Dutch lace braid. Not sure how to Dutch braid? Split this section into three, cross the right piece under the middle, then the left under the right adding small amounts of hair from the top of the head to each section as you go. Continue this until you reach the crown.
  • At this point, switch from Dutch braid to a traditional braid and plait right the way down to the end of the hair length. Secure with a small (preferably clear) elastic.
  • Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the right hand side, making sure to keep those braids as symmetrical as possible.
  • Now it’s time to move down a bit and create the second tier of this hairstyle. Repeat steps 1 and 2 again, but this time leaving a small section out on the right hand side for wrapping later and taking the main section of hair from just in front of the ear and switching to the traditional braid at the nape of the neck. Do this on both sides. You should now be left with four hanging braids over loose hair.
  • Once you have completed these braids, it’s time to go onto the final stage of this Game of Thrones hair inspiration style. Twist the top two braids together, making a single section and secure at the crown with a small, clear elastic.
  • Take that now single section made up of the first two braids and combine with the remaining two braids to create an extra large traditional braid. Leave the loose hair loose and plait the braids down the the end and secure.
  • To finish, gather up that remaining loose section of hair at the nape of the neck, drench in hairspray and then wrap around the new large traditional braid, at the top elastic, to neatly hold in place. Secure with a pin using the up and over technique.

Our 4 day bridal hair course is one of our best selling courses and once you know a bit about it, it’s easy to see why!

Whether you’re a professional hairdresser wanting to up your bridal hairstyling game and stay on top of all the latest techniques and trends, or an absolute beginner looking for an insight into the world of bridal hair and and lots of hands on practice, our 4 day bridal hair course ticks all the boxes.

This week we have held our second 4 day bridal hair course of the year (with another coming up in London this November), so what better way to fill you in on what we get up to during those 4 intensive training days than by telling you a bit about it, alongside some of the amazing work our students have created?

We’re ceaselessly impressed by the consistently excellent quality of the work produced by students (not just on our 4 day bridal hair course, but on our 2 day and online AQA accredited courses too!), and no matter what their background or previous experience, every student manages to surprise themselves with how much they have learned and how far they have come in such a short amount of time. With only 6 students on our 4 day bridal hair course, you’ll get plenty of 1-2-1 guidance and loads of practice time.

How does it work?

You might be wondering exactly how we do things on our 4 day bridal hair course and what makes it so great. Here’s a brief run down of what you will cover during your 4 days training with award winning bridal hair stylist, Pam Wrigley:

Day 1

[dt_vc_list dividers=”false”]

  • Hair Prep
  • Using Heated Rollers
  • Working with Short Hair
  • Tumbling up-do’s for bride and MOB
  • Red carpet up-do’s
  • Quick Finger Waves

[/dt_vc_list]

To start you off, the first day will be spent learning some of the basics, but if you’re a pro don’t let this put you off – just because you’ve been shown how to set rollers, secure styles, backcomb and finish before doesn’t mean you know our way (the best way!) of doing things!

Pam Wrigley has been a bridal hair stylist for over 25 years, and as you can probably imagine she’s picked up a nifty trick or two which she is now thrilled to be able to share with her students. Even the most experienced stylists attending our courses are always shocked at how much knowing incredible hairstyling techniques can change the way you create bridal hairstyles, and it’s always for the better!

If you’re new to bridal hairstyling, this is the best introduction you could hope for – you’ll be learning the correct way, at your own pace, how to put together bridal hairstyles so you’ll never have to undo bad styling habits.

On the first day, Pam will give you some really in-depth demonstrations and you’ll start having a go at creating your own styles before lunch! For today, you’ll be getting to grips with these new techniques on training heads so that you’re ready to work with your live models on day 2…

4 day bridal hair course

Day 2

[dt_vc_list dividers=”false”]

  • Live model practice
  • French pleat & Audrey Hepburn
  • Tumbling over the shoulder styles
  • Mother of the Bride styles
  • Buns for short hair
  • Working with extensions

[/dt_vc_list]

On the second day you’ll be raring to go, having learned everything you need to get you started in creating beautiful bridal hairstyles.

First thing, you’ll be introduced to your model (who loves having her hair done, do don’t be nervous!) and then after a quick recap and demonstration you’ll get right into styling.

Today, you’ll be expanding your knowledge of working with short hair both as it is and also including extensions. Pam will show you how to create some of the most popular bridal hairstyles for brides, bridesmaids and mother of the bride, including a fabulous vintage inspired Audrey Hepburn look which works fantastically well with both long and short hair.

4 day bridal hair course

Day 3

[dt_vc_list dividers=”false”]

  • Live model practice
  • Creating different curls & waves
  • High buns for long hair
  • ½ up styles & 2-in-1 styles
  • Working with donuts and padding
  • Time trial

[/dt_vc_list]

On day 3 you’ll be working with live models again, but this time with long hair.

You’ll discover how to create different curls and waves using both tongs and rollers – ever wondered about the difference between creating a corkscrew curl or a more beachy wave? You don’t need loads of different hairstyling tools, you just need a set of rollers and great technique!

You’ll work with some more high fashion bridal hairstyles, such as a high ballerina bun, using donuts and padding to develop that perfect shape, and also some really classic looks.

You’ll be shown slow, focused demonstrations on how to create each style, but you’re also free to experiment! We encourage our 4 day bridal hair course students to make each style their own and play around with everything they’re learning. The idea behind the course is not that you’ll go away having learned a set few styles, but that you feel confident in putting together any hairstyle.

4 day bridal hair course

Day 4

[dt_vc_list dividers=”false”]

  • Working with long, thick, heavy Hair
  • Low Buns
  • Plaits: all types covered including rope twists, fishtail & waterfall

  • Securing Accessories: Veil, tiara, fresh flowers
  • Business Advice Session

Recap with Pam in the morning and add some lovely plaits and braids into your new hairstyle repertoire before moving on to work with your stunning model and getting some really fabulous photos for your portfolio.

We’ll have a full studio set up and a pro photographer and makeup artist provided to make sure your work looks it’s absolute best. What you do with your photoshoot is up to you! One of our favourite Oscars hairstyles has to be from Julia Roberts who wore vintage Valentino to the 73rd Academy Awards back in 2001. She selected a gown from Valentino’s 1992 collection, looking the epitome of old Hollywood glamour when she collected the award for Best Actress in Erin Brockovich. Julia Roberts wore this vintage Valentino gown to the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001 where she won best Actress for Erin Brockovich. The black velvet gown with white piping was paired with subtle jewellery and make up and the most beautiful updo. Take a look at how to create our take on it.

Step one: Start with freshly washed and thoroughly dried hair. Apply a hair mousse that will lift the roots and evenly cover the hair from the roots to the tips. With the hair dryer and a large flat brush create extra body and shine.

Step two: Next create a side parting on the left side of the head. Then create a section from the parting to the top of the ear on both sides, and a final section from ear to ear at the back. Clip the bottom section out of the way.

Step three: With the back section you need to backcomb it to build in more volume. Smooth over the top of the section and create a loose ponytail. You can mist over the section with hairspray to tame any flyaways. Unclip the bottom section and then pin the ponytail into the base.

Step four: Now take all of the loose hair and roll it up into the base of the ponytail allowing it to spread out. Take hold of a large bobbypin and pin it right into the base.

Step five: Take the front section on the right hand side that you left out at the start, pulling it over to the left and wrap it around and under the roll. Pin in place and then do the same with the section on the left, pulling it over to the right wrapping it around and under the roll. Again pin it in place.

With braids all the rage, we took a look back at the archives and spotted this ‘do from Hilary Duff. Back in 2010 she rocked this look at the book signing of her novel Elixir. The beauty of it is that it is not initially clear how many braids there are, where they start, or where they finish. It is quite a difficult look to recreate but we have broken it down into a step by step guide for you to follow. The style obviously works best on those with long hair, either wavy or straight.

Step 1: Divide hair up into four separate sections; one at the top, bottom, left and right. Clip up all of the sections except for the one on the right.

Step 2: With this section do a slightly loose French braid until you reach just behind the ear and then change to a regular braid. When you come to the end secure it with a clear band.

Step 3: Now do exactly the same with the section on the left side.

Step 4: Take the section at the top of the head and again French braid until you get to the crown where you switch to the regular braid.

Step 5: Divide up the bottom section into five separate sections and braid each one into a regular braid, securing with clear bands.

Step 6: With each of the five bottom braids you now need to wrap them from left to right, pinning them as you go.

Step 7: Take hold of the side braids and weave them together to create a swirly shape, making sure that you tuck any ends under. Again as you go make sure to pin them in place.

Step 8: With the area that is left at the top of the head, fill this space by swirling the final braid. This should also give the style some height. Pin as you go and then spray over with some strong hold hairspray to keep everything in place.
