soft relaxed bridal hairstyles

How to create soft relaxed bridal hairstyles

One of the most requested wedding hair styles by far this year has been the soft, relaxed bridal hairstyle.

Whether you are working with long, short or medium length hair there is a wide variety of hairstyles you can choose from.

However, as a bridal hairstylist your job is not only to create a beautiful bridal hairstyle. Our job is to make sure each style we create is secure. So your clients can be confident that their soft, relaxed wedding up-do will stay up all night!

There are tips and tricks that will really help you when it comes to creating long lasting bridal hair styles. Whether they are smooth and sleek, or soft and relaxed.

Relaxed Bridal hairstyles for short hair

Working with short hair can be a challenge. But once you know how to create the right foundations and how to secure the hair properly your confidence will soar.

I created this gorgeous bridal hair style on Elizabeth, one of my brides. Elizabeth had shoulder length hair so I created a gorgeous textured low bun hairstyle.

By using padding I was able to make the bun appear a little bit bigger. Whilst at the same time I could use the padding to help me to secure the hair. So creating a soft, relaxed looking low bun hairstyle.

You can watch me create this fabulous wedding hair style live, here on my YouTube channel.

Tousled, soft, Relaxed hair styles for long hair

Working with long thick heavy hair needs skill. Especially if your bride wants a soft, relaxed looking up do. And it is even more important than ever, that you create the right foundations.

One of my clients Loren got ready earlier this year in The Hard Rock Cafe in London. As you can see, Loren had hair that she could almost sit on!

Luckily she booked a bridal hair and makeup trial run a couple of months before. I had allowed plenty of time and so was able to try a couple of different ideas.

I discovered I didn’t need to curl all her hair. Which was a lucky escape – as she had so much hair! Instead, I straightened all the hair – to achieve a glossy finish. And in short, created a pony tail in the nape of the neck, curled the hair in the ponytail and created the bun.

My top tip when working creating soft relaxed wedding hair styles on long hair USE PADDING!

When styling short hair padding gives bulk to the style. When creating hair styles for long thick heavy hair, padding gives stability.

HAIR Tutorials FOR All hair types

Whatever your client’s hair type, straight, wavy or curly, short or long, we’ve got tutorials explaining exactly what to do and how to create a wide variety of beautiful hairstyles.

HAIR ANALYSIS for Afro Hair, CURL TYPE & POROSITY

The curl type of Afro hair is determined by the shape of the follicle that hair grows out of from the scalp. The curl pattern is also identified by the shape that the strands of hair make, whether they kink, curve, or wind into spirals.

Most people with curly textured hair have more than one type of pattern on their head. They can also have several different textures, which all have to somehow look cohesive when you style it.

Hair Porosity – working wth Afro hair

The porosity of hair dictates how quickly the hair can absorb and hold on to moisture, it can be low, normal, or high.

Natural hair can prone to breakage during brushing and detangling.

Join our online course today and learn all about Afro hair. So you’ll be able to gain the confidence to work with this beautiful, versatile hair type.

Real Life…

Pam recently had the pleasure of training a fantastic group in their lovely salon and the students had a real range of experience – from just 6 months in the biz, to 30 years! But this wasn’t a problem at all.

Everyone was catered for, with some of the team focusing on updating and honing in on their skills and others, straight out of college, learning everything from scratch.

An immensely fun day was had by all, creating textured styles, beachy waves, beautiful braids, perfecting backcombing, half up styles, high buns and low buns and mermaid styles as well as learning how to use padding and extensions and how to secure the hair properly with bobby pins and hair pins.

All this in 1 day! It is possible & you will LOVE it!

Summer Brides Wedding Hair and Make Up Inspiration 2018

We’re in the midst of wedding season which means an influx of summer brides wanting the perfect hair and make up for their Big Day and it’s our job, as the experts, to help them make the right choice.

Your bride will want to feel confident, comfortable and beautiful and her hair and makeup will go a long way in achieving that. There are many things to consider when helping her choose the final look and while the style of hair and make up needs to fit the feel of the wedding it also needs to be true to the bride’s natural style. She will want to look like the best version of herself and look great in all the wedding photos too, so you’ve got to create the best of both worlds! Even if she wants a natural style, it has to be defined enough to work on camera.

Experimentation at the trial run is key to finding a look they love and they may even end up opting for a style they would never have considered before! So listen to what they want, try it out, but don’t be afraid to offer your opinion too. It’s important that you find out where they’re getting married, the style of dress, details they want to show off, what they consider their best feature and parts they may want to hide to help you figure out a look they’ll love. Don’t push it though. At the end of the day, remember that they are the star of the show, so don’t overrun their ideas if it’s something they really want. It’s your job to make them feel a million dollars!

HIGH BUNS & TOP KNOTS

The last thing summer brides want to worry about on their wedding day is overheating! So a high bun can work as a fab suggestion for a summer bride that will keep her feeling fresh all day long.

Whether your bride wants an elegant style or a more relaxed vibe – you can style it to suit either. Top knots high on the head are great if your bride has a backless dress or detail she wants exposed. If your bride is on the shorter side, they add height and lengthen the neck – super flattering.

RELAXED UP-DO

If your bride is having a hazy summer wedding and wants to look beautifully relaxed, this is a lovely style of up-do to suggest, but be aware that these relaxed and ‘effortless’ styles actually take a fair bit of work to get spot on and make stay in place, so be sure you’re well practised.

Allowing a few delicate strands to fall loose, gently framing the face, adds to this soft, romantic look.

Incorporate real flowers as your bride’s accessory (affordable and beautiful! Have them ask their florist to wire the blooms for ease of use) or keep it all-natural.

This look is so versatile and can be kept neat or truly messy whilst still looking stunningly summery. Cleverly placed pins using Pam’s ‘up and over technique’ make this look achievable for all hair types.

Sign up to our online course to learn how to secure your styles like a pro!

HALF UP/HALF DOWN

If your bride wants to keep her hair off her face but still have the hair down look, this is the look to suggest. It can be chilled and relaxed like the up-do or super intricate. If your bride is undecided, give her an up-do that can be un-pinned for a fresh night time look! She can dance the night away with a whole new style.

CURLS & WAVES

Get to know your bride, if she spends her life with her hair down, she won’t thank you for pulling her hair into an up-do. Curls and waves are the perfect style, she can have beautiful wedding hair whilst feeling like herself. Defined Hollywood waves or loose, natural curls – you can make this style suit any bride.

BOHO BRAIDS

I’m sure you’ve been asked a million times for Boho braids, they really are a true wedding classic. They’re effortlessly chic and on a hot day, they’ll keep the bride looking and feeling cool! The best thing about braids is that they suit all hair types – long, short, straight and curly. You’re unlikely to have to tell a bride that this won’t work for them!

Keep them loose, romantic and soft or give them edge by keeping them structured. Deconstructed plaits are the BIG thing this summer – perfect for adding flowers or other adornments. You can really give your bride an extra something with a expertly placed accessory. Another selling point is the gorgeous waves your bride will be left with once they’re removed so she can go off on her honeymoon looking great with zero effort.

Braid Like A Pro!

FLOWER CROWNS

Another wedding classic and ideal for a summer wedding. Liaise with your bride and her florist to choose flowers that match her bouquet, to help tie the whole wedding theme together, or pick a few wild flowers for a personal touch. The great thing about flower crowns is that they can completely transform any style and create many different looks. Understated or big and bold, this is the perfect summer brides wedding accessory.

CROWN BRAID

One of the best styles for keeping hair off the brides face and neck and one that will last all day and night, when done right! As with other styles, your bride’s crown braid can be as neat as you want or completely deconstructed. You can in as many accessories as your bride wants or can be kept beautifully simple. Leave curls cascading and combine it with a crown braid on top for a twist on the half up/half down style. So many options mean you’ll keep any type of bride happy!

Beautiful Makeup for Summer Brides…

NATURAL RADIANCE

Summer brides need a lovely, natural glow but they are often worried that they will need a  heavy face of make up on a hot day to achieve that, if their skin is anything less than perfect.

Fortunately, a buildable, tinted moisturiser offers a light alternative with coverage. If your bride wants to look organic, let those freckles show, a la Meghan Markle! Natural and flawless. With a little skill, it is possible to achieve the same look with a full foundation. Your bride can be reassured that she can look light and effortless while feeling comfortable with a heavier coverage.

SUN-KISSED

With cleverly and carefully applied bronzer in all the right places, you can make your bride look sun-kissed. Add contour and highlight, but in moderation and blend, blend, blend! Less is more with this look. If your bride has chosen a high bun or top knot, this makeup look will keep her looking elegant and radiant.

DEWY

Make your summer brides glow for her wedding day. Dewy makeup keeps your bride fresh-faced and looking like the best version of herself. If your bride doesn’t usually wear lots of make up, a dewy face can help her feel comfortable while still looking like a goddess. Select make up that’ll keep her glowing all day so she won’t loose her shine.

summer brides

BARELY THERE

Another great look for a bride who doesn’t wear much make up or is worried about heaviness. Great for a casual wedding or if your bride is opting for a bold, detailed hairstyle. Make her skin your focus, you want a beautiful base and natural eye colours to compliment her eye colour. Don’t feel you need to avoid fake lashes, individual lashes can look very real whilst still adding that something extra. Make your bride looks like she’s radiating love and happiness.

BRIGHT LIP

This look really needs your expertise – be sure you help your bride select a shade that flatters her skin. A bright lip can add a pop of colour without having to go overboard with the makeup. With the right choice, it can suit any bride, age doesn’t need to be an issue. A bold lip can be a great look for a mature bride.

BOLD EYES

The classic smoky eye is a wedding staple but for a summer wedding, add a little twist! If you have a brave bride – go ALL out. If she’s a little more hesitant but still wants to introduce come colour, suggest a coloured eye-liner.

ETHEREAL

Light pinks, barely-there nudes and rosy cheeks create a beautifully, uncomplicated ethereal look. It is the ultimate summer wedding look. Boho-braids are a perfect match. A dash of highlighter in the inner eye add a real pop while keeping the whole look effortless.

he Royal Wedding: Meghan Markle’s Bridal Hair & Makeup

OK, hands up who cried watching Meghan Markle walk herself down the aisle? Or was it that incredible Gospel rendition of Stand By Me that had you tearing up? Whatever got you, there’s no denying that Harry and Meghan’s wedding has almost certainly just broken some kind of record for being the most romantic royal wedding EVER. But as we’re all bridal hair stylists and makeup artists here, lets not pretend that Meghan’s look wasn’t the most important part of the day!

Pam totally nailed it in her predictions for Meghan’s royal wedding hair and makeup (as you can read in our blog here), saying that she would love to style her in a messy low bun and fresh, dewy makeup. Let’s look at a run-down of the royal wedding hair and makeup, as it appeared on the day…

The Royal Wedding: Meghan Markle’s Hair

The gorgeous Meghan is breaking tradition left right and centre! From the now forever famous first kiss on the steps outside the chapel to ensuring a star-studded guestlist and as it turns out, even her hairstyle went against the grain.

Many royal brides before Meghan, including Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth, have worn soft, flowing waves beneath a diamond tiara but Meghan went for a more polished version of a look we’ve seen her wearing a lot recently: a loose, low bun.

Famed hairstylist Serge Normant had exactly that same idea as Pam for Meghan’s hair (great minds think alike!) and the result was a fabulous yet surprisingly natural ‘girl-next-door’ style. There’s been an awful lot of fuss about those stray fly-aways at the front though – a little more hairspray next time, Serge!

But fly-aways or not, this laissez-faire bun looked stunning to us (in fact, the loose, face-framing front kind of added to the charm of the day) and we’re sure to see a lot of brides in 2018 and for many years to come wanting something similar – so get practicing.

Learn how to create Meghan’s royal wedding hairstyle on our online bridal hair course…

Makeup

Staying right on trend, Meghan’s royal wedding makeup including the super-hot grey smoky eye – the perfect way to add a little bit of sex appeal to a bride without being too obvious. Her makeup artist and friend Daniel Martin did this perfectly, keeping the eye-shadow relatively light to be able to get away with some seriously fluttery lashes and ‘face-anchoring’ brows.

Meghan’s skin was kept just as she likes it: fresh and natural enough to see her amazingly cute freckles showing through. Just like Pam said, that pop of pink on the cheeks was present and a peachy, pale pink lip finished the look.

royal wedding

Nails

We had to give a mention to the nails, purely because of the story behind them. Did you know that royals are only allowed to wear certain shades of polish chosen by the queen? And guess what, it’s a steal at £7.99!

Meghan wore the same pink Essie Ballet Slipper nail varnish that has been worn by royal brides for decades and that the queen has worn every day for 30 years.

If you’ve completed one of our courses, you’re now a fully accredited bridal hair and makeup artist – congratulations! The next step, is getting out there and going pro with your services.

You’ve got the talent, you’ve learned the techniques from multi-award winning bridal hair and makeup artist Pam Wrigley so now all you need is to get those clients booked and start working.

The first step is to read our blog ‘Mastered Bridal Hair? Time to Get Paid! Our Top Tips on Going Pro’ where we take you through everything you need to know to get your bridal hair and makeup business up and running. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to go. But hang on – time to get paid? That’s all very well and good, but how on earth do you even begin to figure out how much to charge?!

Valuing your bridal hair and makeup services (or any self-employed service for that matter) is a tricky one: too high and you’ll never get booked, too low and you’ll put clients off as well! And aside from that, there’s the old problem of your own self-worth at play. Are you really good enough to charge that much for your work?

Knowing how much to charge for your services is a tough call. Looking at comparables only works if you really know who to compare yourself to and more often than not, it’s hard to see your own talent from an outside perspective.

So where do you start?

Cost-based Pricing

At the very least, your pricing needs to cover your expenses and then have enough on top so that you’re making a profit too. Putting together a comprehensive makeup kit and buying all the hair products and styling tools you need is expensive, there’s no way around that and it also needs to be maintained. Aside from the kit itself, you also need to take into account the time you might spend working on a look outside of the wedding and trial, your travel costs, your own appearance (which needs to remain professional and well-kept at all time for a good impression) and of course any other business costs such as extra training, setting up a website, paying for your blogs to be written and advertising.

This may be overwhelming to see written out like this, but it’s better to do it now rather than later so that when you do start working, you don’t find yourself at a loss! Take some time to really think through what all of your business costs are and add them up to figure out your monthly needs. When you’ve done that, calculate how much you need to earn on top of that to make good and then divide the total between a realistic number of monthly clients to see how much you should be charging.

Value-based Pricing

But of course, pricing yourself doesn’t (and shouldn’t, past a certain point) be only about making ends meet. Your pricing should also reflect the value of your services. The value of you and your time. This is where people start to struggle, as how can you objectively put a price on your own skills?

It’s difficult, but something that you’ll have to get used to as a self-employed bridal hair and makeup artist. Don’t sell yourself short and make clients think that your services aren’t worth much, but at the same time, don’t price yourself out of the market! It’s important to get this as right as you can from the get-go.

It’s in this instance that looking at comparables can be useful, so do your research. Start looking at other, established bridal hair and makeup artists working in your area and if you’re just starting out, price a little lower. It is really important to look at others near your location as where you are in the world will affect the price people are willing to pay. Don’t price your services at London heights if you live in a rural town and likewise, don’t sell yourself short if you live in a big city.

bridal hair & makeup

Don’t Price Too Low

A big mistake that new bridal hair and makeup artists make is pricing themselves too low.

Although it’s great to offer a competitive fee, a price tag that is way lower than the average will put people off. Believe it or not, if you value your services low, then so will your clients. When it comes to hair and makeup for their big day, brides don’t want a bargain – they want affordable and within their budget, but not cheap, as even if you’re incredibly talented it is likely that people who don’t know you will equate low pricing to low skills.

Also, even if you were able to pick up clients with low pricing, would this be feasible for you to work with and live off? As mentioned above, the cost of a hair and makeup kit is quite high so the fee you charge must cover this and your time. If you want to make it as a full-time hair and makeup artist, you’ve got to price your services realistically and it needs to be this way from the word go. You can increase your prices at a later date, but when you’re just starting to make a name for yourself, hopefully a lot of your work will come through word of mouth from happy clients referring their friends to you and the likelihood is that they will be interested in your services because they can afford the price their friend paid.

Know Your Fees & Be Upfront

Once you’ve figured out how much you want to charge, stick with it and make sure that you know your fees off the top of your head – no client wants to ask you how much something costs only to have you need to think about it. This is very unprofessional, unless it is a special request in which case you would be within your rights to say you will work it out and get back to them.

There’s no need to be secretive about your pricing, so go ahead and have a ‘prices’ page on your website where you lay out exactly how much your services cost, or at the very least a range or ‘prices from’. Most brides have a budget that they need to stick to, so leaving the money conversation to the end is pointless and can be a waste of time for both parties. Find out what the client wants and tell them how much it costs – simples!

bridal hair & makeup

Know What Your Price Includes

Hair and makeup – check. But what else? Does your fee include false lashes? Presumably so. How about hair extensions that you won’t get back? How much is the trial run? That needs to be separate too, but will the cost come off the final price if they book with you?

As a bridal hair and makeup artist, your job extends beyond making a bride look pretty on her big day and so do the costs. The time you spend with the bride is only the beginning – there is also travel time, setting up time and you may even be required to hang around for the reception (for an extra cost). When you take on a wedding, that’s you booked for the full day, even if the hair and makeup itself only takes a couple of hours, so keep that in mind and also remember to consider all the extras.

It’s OK to Work for Free

Sometimes…

Obviously you’re not going to give your time away for nothing once you’re actually taking bookings, but working for free on projects or events that will further your skills or better your portfolio is worthwhile doing.

Before you take on paying clients, you want to be as confident as possible so offer to do hair and makeup for friends and family as practice. It’s also worth getting in touch with magazines, brands and other hair and makeup artists who inspire you to offer yourself up as an assistant – you never know what might come out of that and if you do well, this can often lead to paid work in the future.

It’s always good to keep your portfolio fresh too, so participate in photo-shoots with great photographers and models purely for the gorgeous images. Beautiful photos on your website and social media is one of the best ways to grab the attention of prospective clients, so every opportunity that comes up to do this, go for it!

To help you get clued up on all the best bridal styles for the year ahead, we wanted to give you a run-down of some of our favourite looks that we know we’ll be seeing a lot of it 2018.

Side partings, loose wavy blow-driesbraids and bold up-dos are just a few of our predicted bridal hair trends for 2018. Here are our top picks…

Faux ‘Air-Dryed AND Effortless

2018 is predicted to see a huge rise in trend for the ‘wholesome wedding’: Outdoorsy, woodland themes; “naked” cakes and minimal décor. It seems only fitting for the bride to match the theme!

If you have a bride seeking a more natural look for her Big Day, then faux ‘air-dried’ hair is going to be the ‘do for her. Looking effortless yet stylish, unpolished and cool. With minimal products and tools needed, this hair-down look is all about enhancing the hairs own texture. The idea is to keep it looking naturally gorgeous, like it’s just air-dried that way….

Blow-Dry to Perfection!

Master the art of a gorgeous wavy blow-dry on our 1 day Blow-drying Course

bridal hair
  • Start with damp hair (not wet!) and lightly comb through if needed, although try to do this as little as possible, as you want don’t want to change the hairs natural texture.

  • A little product is vital to make this look work and stop the hair looking fluffy – You want deliberate effortlessness, not genuinely natural hair!

  • Blow dry with a diffuser and lift at the roots. Whether your bride’s hair has a wave or not, a little dab of curl or wave cream like ‘Redken No Blow Dry NBD Airy Cream’ can work wonders.

  • If your bride has fine hair, try adding a little oil to the ends after towel drying to ‘dress’ and then lift and loosen at the roots around the crown to give the appearances of more volume.

  • For extra lift, use those trusty Babyliss heated rollers! If your client would prefer a little extra texture then try ‘Bumble and Bumble Don’t Blow It‘.

Braided Beauty

One trend we will be bringing with us from 2017, all the way through 2018 is the ever-popular plaits and braids. This is one bridal trend that is here to stay. Whether it’s a classic blow out with a baby hair line braid, a pancaked Dutch braid or a beautifully classic French plait; it’s clear to see that 2018 will showcase some of our well loved looks from the last few years.

Why not give your bride a jaw dropping ‘Wow’, with a beautifully slicked-back ‘do and a trio of braids fastened together at the back to give and soft and romantic feel?

  • Set the hair in rollers or blow dry for that essential root-lift.

  • Once the foundation is laid, part the hair into a deep side parting, and spritz with a Sea Salt Spray to add in some texture. We love ‘Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

  • Add a 3 strand braid just beneath the ear on the left side and wrap it across to the right side and secure.

  • Repeat on the right side, securing just under the braid on the left.

  • Using the ends of both braids fold backwards and secure them together with Bobby pins to give the illusion of 3 braids.

  • If you want to add another dimension to this look you can curl the ends of your bride’s hair.

Captivating Curls

Talking of styles that never seem to go out of fashion, let’s talk curls…

2018 bridal hair is all about those waves and curls, natural or not. Loose curls and wavy hair are perfect for all types of bridal looks; whether your client is after an up-do, an all down or somewhere in between. Loose curls and waves are an easy way to achieve that dreamy look that will be seeing so much of in the coming year.

Romantic and sexy, we love this fab texture, even if it is one that makes many bridal hair stylists nervous! Pair bouncy tendrils with woven in flowers in a faux braid, or add in some rope twists for a bohemian half up half down do.

If your bride has natural curls, don’t freak out! We know that this is a challenge many bridal hair stylists out there are afraid of, but with the right techniques you’ll have no problem at all. If your bride is happy to embrace her natural curl, then help her really go for it! Define those ringlets with an excellent curl creme (we love TIGI Curlesque and Boots Essentials Curl Creme) and amp up the volume. If your bride would like to soften her curl, setting rollers in can help to do that in a really gorgeous way, loosening them up and making larger curls rather than tight ones which is often much easier for us to work with if you then want to style an up-do.

Go BIG or Go BOLD

Top knots and long “Rapunzel” plaits are some of the bolder up-dos predicted to be a huge hit for brides in 2018.

The Top knot may not be everyone’s first choice when it comes to bridal hair, but your more alternative bride may like the idea of something bold.

The Top Knot has the potential to be both edgy and elegany, so it’s a great choice for a variety of brides. It will also suit brides who have chosen a backless dress, perfectly, as this fantastic hairstyle will accentuate all those smaller details of the gown and allow the back of the dress to be on show in all it’s timeless beauty, for a real statement.

Why not incorporate both in to a more daring statement piece?

bridal hair
  • Make 2 French plaits using the front section of hair

  • Pull back the rest of the hair in to a high ponytail.

  • Plait the pony tail using a fishtail braid and wrap it in to a bun to make the top knot.

  • Wrap the two French plaits around the top knot and secure in to place with bobby pins.

  • Spray a light coating of hairspray to keep in place.

Get Online

First thing’s first: if you’re not online, get online.

By that, we mean a website, a Facebook business page, a business Instagram account…the lot! If you’re not accessible on the world wide web, not only are you going to be impossible to discover but clients already considering you will lose faith that you’re their best choice.

Having a really sharp, professional looking website with all the necessary info on helps to build trust and reliability before a bride even makes first contact. If you don’t have a website, or at the very least a business page on Facebook with lots of great reviews, then a bride is going to start wondering if you’re experience enough or even ‘legit’.

bridal hair stylist

Get gorgeous photos up in an easy-to-navigate online portfolio, list your prices, make sure that your contact details are clear and simple to find and provide some information about yourself too – your brides-to-be want to get a feel of their bridal hair stylist and know that they are qualified, friendly and confident.

TOP TIP:

Online reviews are crucially important these days, so if you haven’t got any of those yet it’s time to get to work getting some out there! Create some stunning styles for family and friends and ask them to leave reviews on your Facebook page and on Google+ reviews too.

Don’t be shy about getting in touch with old clients either to ask them to put one up as well. Send an email with the links they need to take them right to the review page to make the process easy as pie.

Invest in Yourself

Anyone who works hard and sticks at their passion WILL get a ‘big break’ at some point, but it can take a little while to get there. The most important thing you can do as you make your journey as a Bridal Hair Stylist is to invest in yourself and be learning, continually.

Always be practicing, always be discovering new styles and techniques. Our Online Bridal Hair Course is a fantastic way to keep your head in the game even when things are a bit quiet. You can spend your free time brushing up on everything from correct kit care to the perfect blow-dry. Never rest on your laurels – if you want this, you’ve got to put the time in.

Always Be Learning

Online Bridal Hair Course

Go to Events

Hiding yourself away and hoping that the work will just come to you is not great business practice. If you want to be a successful Bridal Hair Stylist you’ve got to put yourself out there, get known and if you get the opportunity, show off your skills!

Wedding fairs can be an excellent place to source new clients, so start researching upcoming events and aim to get booked into at least one. Attending the big hair events such as Pro Hair Live and the Bridal Exhibition is invaluable too – pop along, take in some seminars and catwalks and mingle. Make those contacts!

Be Pro-active

Even if you’re struggling to get paid work, don’t be down about it, just use that time to assist wherever possible (this often will lead to paid work!) and stay focused when you do. There’s no point going along to work but not paying enough attention to learn anything: watch how to lead stylist does things, stay on top of what products and tools he or she might need next and be brave enough to jump in if they ask you to.

As a Bridal Hair Stylist in such a competitive industry, it’s up to you to think outside the box to get more work. Get in touch with PR companies, magazines, other hair stylists or makeup artists and event teams and ask if they are looking for a hair stylist. You never know – you might make a career-changing call at exactly the right time!

Wedding Hairstylist Must-Haves: Tools & Products You NEED in Your Kit!

wedding hairstylist can only do so much without an amazing kit to help create those gorgeous styles, but with so many choices of products and tools out there it can be hard to know where to begin. Messing up on buying those all-important essentials can be a costly and time-consuming error, so aside from your pins, grips, tail comb and padding, we thought that we’d share a few of Pam’s absolute must-have items to set you on the right track.

Wedding Hairstylist Products

TIGI Catwalk Curlesque Curls Rock Amplifier

For curls that rock, look no further than this incredible product – a firm favourite of Pam’s for smooth, frizz-free curls with perfect definition that lasts.

Boots Essentials Curl Cream

Price isn’t always everything: This product has been around for ages and for a bargainous £1.99, you really can’t go wrong – so stock up! This curl crème is ideal for smoothing out curls that are a bit more stubborn than your average.

Dust It by Schwarzkopf

Dry shampoo isn’t just for bad hair days, it’s also brilliant for creating beautiful volume at the roots and great texture throughout. If you’re struggling to get a grip to stay put on extra silky hair, a quick dusting of this should sort you out. Although this is an awesome product, it’s not so brilliant on dark hair as it can show up in an ashy tone. Label.M Brunette Resurrection Style Dust is Pam’s go-to alternative for brunettes and raven haired beauties.

wedding hairstylist

Elnett Professional Hair Spray

Note the ‘professional’ here – you are a wedding hairstylist after all! This is not your standard Elnett hairspray that you can pick up from chemists and supermarkets. Unlike the highstreet product, which has a tendency to be a bit too wet and crispy for flawless styling, this pro version is available at most beauty wholesalers. Go for regular for a natural looking hold.

Wedding Hairstylist Tools

Babyliss Pro Heated Rollers (x2!)

Pam always uses Babyliss Pro heated rollers on the Create Beautiful Hair Bridal Hair Courses to create the dream foundation for any style. They’re easy to use, quick to heat up and cool down and they will give every style the perfect volume and root lift from the get-go.

Buy two kits and always bring both with you – this way you’ll never not have enough rollers and you can be heating more up as you work. If you need extra, individual rollers, you can buy those too.

Diva Wands

Creating all sorts of different curls and waves is a cinch with your trusty tongs and wands, but which size should you get? Pam always recommends that her students invest in 19mm & 25mm tongs and 25mm-13mm wand. Diva wands are an excellent brand and as an added bonus, they all come with heat proof gloves which is an invaluable bit of kit for a wedding hairstylist.

GHDs or Coroliss Straightening Iron

Quick and easy ringlets for flower girls or the tool of choice for smooth and sleek styles, there’s a reason that GHDs are so popular – they really are fantastic! Coroliss is another, lesser known brand that makes superb straighteners and these are actually Pam’s number one choice and what she uses on her own brides.

Boar Bristle & Nylon Hair Brush

A regular, plastic brush won’t cut it if you want to keep your styles perfect and free from flyaways. Whether you go for a classic Mason Pearson or a budget (but almost as good!) version by Sonia Kashuk or Denman, make sure that it’s aa boar bristle and nylon mix, for the smoothing and detangling action in one.

wedding hairstylist

Fishing Tackle Box

Not strictly a tool but definitely something worth a mention – where are you supposed to keep all of your black, brown and blonde pins and grips? In a fishing tackle box of course!

This is one of Pam’s top tips of the trade and how she keeps all of her bits and bobs really organised – a must when you’re keeping to a strict wedding timetable.
