Real Life…

Pam recently had the pleasure of training a fantastic group in their lovely salon and the students had a real range of experience – from just 6 months in the biz, to 30 years! But this wasn’t a problem at all.

Everyone was catered for, with some of the team focusing on updating and honing in on their skills and others, straight out of college, learning everything from scratch.

An immensely fun day was had by all, creating textured styles, beachy waves, beautiful braids, perfecting backcombing, half up styles, high buns and low buns and mermaid styles as well as learning how to use padding and extensions and how to secure the hair properly with bobby pins and hair pins.

All this in 1 day! It is possible & you will LOVE it!

Summer Brides Wedding Hair and Make Up Inspiration 2018

We’re in the midst of wedding season which means an influx of summer brides wanting the perfect hair and make up for their Big Day and it’s our job, as the experts, to help them make the right choice.

Your bride will want to feel confident, comfortable and beautiful and her hair and makeup will go a long way in achieving that. There are many things to consider when helping her choose the final look and while the style of hair and make up needs to fit the feel of the wedding it also needs to be true to the bride’s natural style. She will want to look like the best version of herself and look great in all the wedding photos too, so you’ve got to create the best of both worlds! Even if she wants a natural style, it has to be defined enough to work on camera.

Experimentation at the trial run is key to finding a look they love and they may even end up opting for a style they would never have considered before! So listen to what they want, try it out, but don’t be afraid to offer your opinion too. It’s important that you find out where they’re getting married, the style of dress, details they want to show off, what they consider their best feature and parts they may want to hide to help you figure out a look they’ll love. Don’t push it though. At the end of the day, remember that they are the star of the show, so don’t overrun their ideas if it’s something they really want. It’s your job to make them feel a million dollars!

HIGH BUNS & TOP KNOTS

The last thing summer brides want to worry about on their wedding day is overheating! So a high bun can work as a fab suggestion for a summer bride that will keep her feeling fresh all day long.

Whether your bride wants an elegant style or a more relaxed vibe – you can style it to suit either. Top knots high on the head are great if your bride has a backless dress or detail she wants exposed. If your bride is on the shorter side, they add height and lengthen the neck – super flattering.

RELAXED UP-DO

If your bride is having a hazy summer wedding and wants to look beautifully relaxed, this is a lovely style of up-do to suggest, but be aware that these relaxed and ‘effortless’ styles actually take a fair bit of work to get spot on and make stay in place, so be sure you’re well practised.

Allowing a few delicate strands to fall loose, gently framing the face, adds to this soft, romantic look.

Incorporate real flowers as your bride’s accessory (affordable and beautiful! Have them ask their florist to wire the blooms for ease of use) or keep it all-natural.

This look is so versatile and can be kept neat or truly messy whilst still looking stunningly summery. Cleverly placed pins using Pam’s ‘up and over technique’ make this look achievable for all hair types.

Sign up to our online course to learn how to secure your styles like a pro!

HALF UP/HALF DOWN

If your bride wants to keep her hair off her face but still have the hair down look, this is the look to suggest. It can be chilled and relaxed like the up-do or super intricate. If your bride is undecided, give her an up-do that can be un-pinned for a fresh night time look! She can dance the night away with a whole new style.

CURLS & WAVES

Get to know your bride, if she spends her life with her hair down, she won’t thank you for pulling her hair into an up-do. Curls and waves are the perfect style, she can have beautiful wedding hair whilst feeling like herself. Defined Hollywood waves or loose, natural curls – you can make this style suit any bride.

BOHO BRAIDS

I’m sure you’ve been asked a million times for Boho braids, they really are a true wedding classic. They’re effortlessly chic and on a hot day, they’ll keep the bride looking and feeling cool! The best thing about braids is that they suit all hair types – long, short, straight and curly. You’re unlikely to have to tell a bride that this won’t work for them!

Keep them loose, romantic and soft or give them edge by keeping them structured. Deconstructed plaits are the BIG thing this summer – perfect for adding flowers or other adornments. You can really give your bride an extra something with a expertly placed accessory. Another selling point is the gorgeous waves your bride will be left with once they’re removed so she can go off on her honeymoon looking great with zero effort.

Braid Like A Pro!

FLOWER CROWNS

Another wedding classic and ideal for a summer wedding. Liaise with your bride and her florist to choose flowers that match her bouquet, to help tie the whole wedding theme together, or pick a few wild flowers for a personal touch. The great thing about flower crowns is that they can completely transform any style and create many different looks. Understated or big and bold, this is the perfect summer brides wedding accessory.

CROWN BRAID

One of the best styles for keeping hair off the brides face and neck and one that will last all day and night, when done right! As with other styles, your bride’s crown braid can be as neat as you want or completely deconstructed. You can in as many accessories as your bride wants or can be kept beautifully simple. Leave curls cascading and combine it with a crown braid on top for a twist on the half up/half down style. So many options mean you’ll keep any type of bride happy!

Beautiful Makeup for Summer Brides…

NATURAL RADIANCE

Summer brides need a lovely, natural glow but they are often worried that they will need a  heavy face of make up on a hot day to achieve that, if their skin is anything less than perfect.

Fortunately, a buildable, tinted moisturiser offers a light alternative with coverage. If your bride wants to look organic, let those freckles show, a la Meghan Markle! Natural and flawless. With a little skill, it is possible to achieve the same look with a full foundation. Your bride can be reassured that she can look light and effortless while feeling comfortable with a heavier coverage.

SUN-KISSED

With cleverly and carefully applied bronzer in all the right places, you can make your bride look sun-kissed. Add contour and highlight, but in moderation and blend, blend, blend! Less is more with this look. If your bride has chosen a high bun or top knot, this makeup look will keep her looking elegant and radiant.

DEWY

Make your summer brides glow for her wedding day. Dewy makeup keeps your bride fresh-faced and looking like the best version of herself. If your bride doesn’t usually wear lots of make up, a dewy face can help her feel comfortable while still looking like a goddess. Select make up that’ll keep her glowing all day so she won’t loose her shine.

summer brides

BARELY THERE

Another great look for a bride who doesn’t wear much make up or is worried about heaviness. Great for a casual wedding or if your bride is opting for a bold, detailed hairstyle. Make her skin your focus, you want a beautiful base and natural eye colours to compliment her eye colour. Don’t feel you need to avoid fake lashes, individual lashes can look very real whilst still adding that something extra. Make your bride looks like she’s radiating love and happiness.

BRIGHT LIP

This look really needs your expertise – be sure you help your bride select a shade that flatters her skin. A bright lip can add a pop of colour without having to go overboard with the makeup. With the right choice, it can suit any bride, age doesn’t need to be an issue. A bold lip can be a great look for a mature bride.

BOLD EYES

The classic smoky eye is a wedding staple but for a summer wedding, add a little twist! If you have a brave bride – go ALL out. If she’s a little more hesitant but still wants to introduce come colour, suggest a coloured eye-liner.

ETHEREAL

Light pinks, barely-there nudes and rosy cheeks create a beautifully, uncomplicated ethereal look. It is the ultimate summer wedding look. Boho-braids are a perfect match. A dash of highlighter in the inner eye add a real pop while keeping the whole look effortless.

Getting Started…

How to Prep

Just like on our face-to-face courses, we’ve made sure to include plenty of full length tutorials that take you through everything you need to know when it comes to hair prep.

A style is only as good as it’s foundation, as far as we’re concerned, so it’s important to use excellent techniques from the get-go, not just when you get to ‘the main event’. No matter what your experience level, you’ll find our tutorials easy to follow and infinitely useful.

Even if you’re already a pro-hairstylist it’s a good idea to ‘go back to basics’ with our online bridal hair course because you’re bound to learn something new, thanks to Pam’s 25 years experience in the wedding industry.

Backcombing

Knowing how to backcomb correctly is an essential part of bridal hairstyling, as this will not only enable you to create fantastic volume and padding within styles without the need for donuts or hair extensions, but it will also help you to secure your grips in such a way that they just won’t budge!

Pam will take you through how to backcomb the hair in a simple, safe and effective way that won’t hurt your client’s scalp(!) and will give you exactly the effect you desire.

Smooth & Secure

It’s no good creating a gorgeous style that doesn’t last, so learning steadfast securing techniques is a must.

From Pam’s signature Create Beautiful Hair ‘up & over’ method to the ‘shake test’, our online bridal hair course will help you create bridal hairstyles that will look as great last thing at night as it does walking down the aisle.

Confidence is key when it comes to making it as a successful Bridal Hairstylist, but it’s not unusual for us to meet students who have real fears about embarking on a new career or giving it their all in their chosen profession as a Bridal Hairstylist.

Sign up to our Online Bridal Hair Course for ‘Quick Tips’ on the go!

“Thanks for all the help! I’ve been hairdressing for 25 years plus but I’ve always been terrified of Bridal Hair.

I started your online bridal hair course and just a few weeks in I’ve managed to do the hair for my daughters wedding! I’d never have been brave enough without this course. Thanks Again.” – Michelle Jones, CBH Online Student

All of our Bridal Hair Courses are tailored to suit everyone’s individual needs and by taking you through everything step-by-step, you can rest assured than upon completion of your chosen course you’ll be feeling ready to take on any style in any situation!

Even though all of our students come to us at different levels, we often hear the same fears over and over again, from taking on styling hair with a fringe to being equipped with the right products in your kit to meet your client’s needs and fix common problems.

The number one this to remember is: DONT PANIC!! Stay calm and refer to the ‘Quick Tips’ section of Create Beautiful Hair Online to get the answers you need, as you need them.

Fringes & Bangs

Don’t get caught up on what the models fringe looks on Instagram – just get it right for your client and take your time finding out what her hair wants to do.

Don’t fight the direction of the hair, work with it and allow the hair to ‘show you’ where it naturally wants to sit.

Hair Extensions & Instagram

Don’t feel intimidated by the impressive styles you see on Instagram!

90% of the styles you see on Instagram and Pinterest have been created using hair extensions and you can create them too with just a little bit of practice.

Tricks of the trade

It’s easy to create extra volume and oomph, so don’t worry if your client has thin or fine hair.

  • Use Donuts for extra volume when creating soft messy buns for short hair. When positioned correctly you won’t be able to see the padding at all.
  • American Dream and Hair Rehab supply excellent quality hair extensions and we always use them on our Bridal Hair Courses. Join one of our Bridal Hair Courses and get great discounts on any American Dream product!

How to Help Your Client Choose Her Perfect Bridal Hairstyle

Bridal hair clients often come in two factions – they’ll either have no idea what look they’re after, or they’ll have their heart set on something very particular. Whilst the first option may be daunting to a newbie hairstylist or an experienced bridal hairstylist feeling a little unsure, it’s actually the latter which has the potential to be the most problematic of the two.

With so much inspiration available out there, from Pinterest to Instagram, most brides-to-be will do extensive research to find a look they love. Getting ideas to work with is great, but selecting a bridal hair style on the basis of how it looks on someone else can be a huge mistake as in actual fact, there are many factors that will determine whether a bridal hairstyle is right for someone or not.

 Bridal Hair Stylist Top Tip!

Don’t be shy about offering your expertise.

If your bride has her heart set on a particular hair style always give it a go – even if you think it won’t be right for her.

Gently nudge her in the right direction – using your skill and expertise to adapt the style to suit her than to just re-creating a style from a photo.

You’ve been hired because she thinks you’re great at what you do – work with your clients ideas by all means, but don’t hold back on offering alternatives if you think something isn’t quite right.

Balance Your Bride’s Face Shape

On our Bridal Hair Courses, you’ll learn how to adapt any bridal hairstyle to suit all face shapes, but to do that, it’s helpful to know what it is you’re trying to achieve when altering the ‘do.

It all comes down to creating balance and using different techniques to give your client’s face a more oval appearance. You can often see what needs to be accentuated or minimised simply by taking a look and figuring out their face shape – although reading your client’s body language and listening to their preferences is important too, as you can never really guess which bits they love about themselves and which they don’t.

There are only a handful of standard face shapes that your client is likely to fall under and once you’re familiar with what to look for, knowing what you’re working with will come naturally to you.

On our face to face and online bridal hair courses, you’ll learn all about how to make the most of every face shape and how to subtly tweak hairstyles to make them perfect for everyone.

Need a confidence boost and refresh for working with your clients? Come on our 2 Day Bridal Hair Course!

Consider Outside Influences

It’s not just the bride herself who will have an impact on whether a style works or not, there are plenty of outside contributing factors that you need to consider when figuring out that perfect bridal hairstyle:

The Bride Groom

You might be surprised to hear it, but the Groom can actually play a large role when it comes to helping your client find the bridal hairstyle that is right for her big day.

She may not have considered this, so it’s worth posing questions about her fiance’s height, as this is mainly what it’s going to come down to. If the bride has a husband-to-be who isn’t particularly tall, she probably won’t want to be towering over him in heels, a huge dress and a tall ballerina bun! On the other end of the scale, maybe her partner is very tall and she wants something to make her look taller – it’s amazing what a huge impact the right (or wrong!) bridal hairstyle can have.

The Wedding Venue

Just as it’s so important to get a dress to match the venue, the same goes for choosing that bridal hairstyle.

The look you create for your bride has to fall in line with the look for the whole day ahead. Perhaps she’s having an informal barn wedding where a relaxed, boho style would look best, or maybe it’s a full on Cathedral wedding where only a classic style will do! Finding out all the details is essential for creating the right look during your bride’s trial and therefore key to making her happy and securing that client.

The Wedding Dress

Even more important than the venue, is the dress. The wedding dress your bride will be wearing not only gives you an insight into her style and the theme of her wedding day, it will also dictate where to balance out and what needs to be shown off.

A dress with a daring low back cries out for an up-do, not long hair that hides away that gorgeous detail. An A-symmetrical or single strapped dress needs balancing, perhaps with a bun to the opposite side. A big ballgown needs a hairstyle to match, not one that gets lost in the extravagance.

Ask your bride to describe her dress or better yet, get her to have a photo ready at her trial so you can see it for yourself.

Bridal Hair Accessories

Pam recommends finding a hairstyle that suits the client and then working out where to put the hair accessory – rather than creating a style around the hair accessory.

Don’t worry too much about the position of the veil when you do the trial – it can be easier to work out the perfect place for the veil on the wedding day – when she has her dress on and everything comes together nicely.

Don’t Fear Backcombing

Backcombing looks scarier than it actually is – honest! If you do it right, you’re not going to ruin your client’s hair and it can make all the difference to a finished style.

One of the main things that you want to think about with fine hair is how to add in that extra volume without going crazy on the products and backcombing is a great way to do this. Just a little bit of teasing at the roots can go a long way in really plumping up a style and it will help your grips to stay put too!

Go Easy on the Product

It’s way too easy to overdo it with product on fine hair, leaving it looking limp and greasy, which is the last thing your client is going to want on her wedding day! You’re going to want to use some products such as hairspray and perhaps a dry shampoo or texturizer but steer clear of anything too heavy and instruct your client to not use any product on their hair before coming to you.

Do Use Hairspray

Just because you need to use products with caution doesn’t mean that fine hair doesn’t need it. If you’re curling very thin, fine hair using a great hairspray is essential, or those curls will be dropping out in five minutes!

Regular hairspray can be a bit too heavy to use in the amounts you’ll need for a good curl, even on thicker hair, but we love Elnett Professional hairspray which has a much finer mist. You can’t buy this from high-street shops so make sure that you stock up from hairstylist wholesalers.

Embrace Rollers

We’re big fans of heated rollers and on our wedding hairstylist course, we’ll teach you how to set them perfectly to create an ideal base for every style. Using heated rollers to prep the hair is a must, particularly for fine hair, as this will add much-needed volume that looks really lovely and natural before you even begin creating your style.

If you’re really struggling to get the lift you want in your client’s thin hair, one thing you can try is switching their parting up for one they wouldn’t normally wear. This is a sneaky trick can can instantly give roots a boost away from the scalp for a thicker appearance.

Use Extensions

As a wedding hairstylist, you’ve got to be able to give your client exactly what they want for their big day, so if they’ve got their heart set on a style that is better suited to longer, thicker hair don’t be afraid to use those hair extensions.

Not sure how to work with hair extensions? Check out our recent blog telling you how!

Who is the course taught by?

Pam Wrigley is an award-winning bridal hairstylist with over 25 year’s experience; a pro-hair live speaker in London and Manchester; a regular featured hairstylist and makeup artist in magazines and blogs such as Vogue, Pro Hairdresser, Brides, Confetti and Wedding Planner and the founder and head trainer of Create Beautiful Hair.

Our in-depth, step-by-step tutorials are brought to you by Pam, who has designed the videos to be able to share her ground breaking bridal hairstyling techniques in a clear and concise way. We also have other expert team members in some videos, to bring you the very best of braids and blow-drying.

You will learn primarily from these video tutorials, but we also have an ‘Ask Pam’ feature, which enables you to send your questions and progress pics to Pam at any time throughout the course. Pam will then get back to you for 1-2-1 coaching – at no extra cost! You can also continue to learn casually and use this feature once you have completed the course, meaning that when you start working you’ll have Pam on hand to guide you.

What experience level is the course suitable for?

Our online bridal hair course is suitable for all experience levels – even those of you who feel totally clueless about proper hairstyling techniques. All we ask is that you love working with hair! You don’t need any existing qualifications to take part.

Whilst this is the case, don’t let this put you off if you are an experienced hairstylist looking at taking the course. The reason that our online bridal hair course is suitable for everyone is because we have hundreds of video tutorials available at varying levels of complexity.

We offer tutorials right from the beginning, showing how to correctly set rollers and how to prep the hair, right the way up to quite challenging hairstyles and advanced hairstyling techniques. If you are a pro hairstylist though, we do recommend that you watch our simpler tutorials too as the techniques that Pam uses are her own, developed over 25+ years of experience, and even advanced hairstylists often learn something new that completely changes their bridal hair game for the better!
