10 Start-Up Business Tips for a Freelance Hairstylist

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1535286060438{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]So, you’re thinking about becoming a freelance hairstylist? There are a number of reasons to freelance – flexible hours, freedom to choose the work you do and the chance to be your own boss. But there are also ‘cons’ – no guaranteed wage, no sick pay or holiday pay and all the behind administrative work you may not have considered.

Going it alone is a huge commitment and whilst the rewards may be great, so is the risk!

There are many factors to consider before you make the leap but with a little expert advice, you can be sure you’re not leaping blind!

Here are 10 ‘tips’ for starting a freelance hairstylist business.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”24119″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Is it for you?

Before you commit to life as a freelance hairstylist or makeup artist, you need to be sure that you have what it takes. You need to be motivated and passionate about what you do. Without a ‘boss’ encouraging you to work hard, you may find you’re taking it a little easy. You need be able to manage your time effectively and have the confidence to get up and go!

Spend some time with a freelance hairstylist or freelance makeup artist, do your research sp that you can go into the unknown with the confidence to know that that you’re up for the challenge and can put in the effort needed. As your own boss, it won’t happen unless you make it happen.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Any hairstylist or makeup artist needs to be sociable, but as a freelancer having the gift of the gab is even more important! You’ll need to be able to converse with all manner of people – clients, businesses, suppliers and the tax man, to name a few so make sure you feel able to hold your own and come across as a successful and trustworthy stylist! It’s OK if you’re nervous to start with, you’ll soon get used to it and the more confident you are with your skill-set, the more confident you’ll be, speaking to your clients.

You’ll also need to be pretty thick-skinned, flexible and reliable! Clients will expect you to respond quickly and professionally and sometimes, you’ll have to deal with dry spells. This doesn’t mean you’re no good or that all hope is lost! It takes time to build up a business, so be patient and try not to take the slow months personally.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”24133″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Before you even consider going it alone, it is essential to make sure you have all the relevant qualifications. In order to really stand out, you’ll want to be able to offer more than just the basics, so train. Train. Train!

Perfect it and make it yours![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”24111″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”Keep Learning!” txt_align=”center” add_button=”bottom” btn_title=”View Courses” btn_size=”lg” btn_align=”center” btn_link=”|||”][/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Behind the Scenes

As a freelance hairstylist or makeup artist, much, much more comes into play than being a hairstylist in a salon…

Don’t underestimate the administrative work you’ll need to put in (and if you need help in busy years, invest in an accountant!).

You’ll need to make sure you have the necessary insurance, you’ll need to keep your taxes in order, you’ll want a website, you’ll need to invest in advertising and you’ll have to manage your own time/bookings/cancellations.

To have any chance of succeeding, the ‘behind the scenes’ work is crucial. And to avoid any hefty tax bills, you’ll want to make sure you are fully prepared and keeping your records accurately!

You’ll need to make time for correspondence with clients. This will probably mean that you don’t get to work regular hours and instead with have to allow time in the evenings to deal with all the often boring, but essential stuff.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”24121″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Getting Started

The most important thing, initially, (once you’ve made sure you’re fully insured and have all the necessary equipment/training) is actually getting business. So how do you do that?

Figure out your ‘brand’. Even as an individual it’s important that you present yourself as a business with a consistent style. Get your business cards out there and be sure you’re targeting the correct audience on social media and beyond.

Attend wedding fairs and chat to wedding vendors, contact local bloggers and be seen at events. Volunteering to help out on magazine shoots and at events when your first starting out can really help you get your foot in the door.

You’ll need to have a strong portfolio of work for clients to even consider hiring you, so come on our 4 day course for a professional portfolio shoot, or arrange your own.

Use social media to your advantage! In today’s technological age, you need to have a real online presence in order to build a client base. Think about offering incentives to begin with, discounts or even freebies and collaborations when building your portfolio.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”Amazing Photoshoot Advice!” txt_align=”center” add_button=”bottom” btn_title=”Read Blog” btn_size=”lg” btn_align=”center” btn_link=”|||”][/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

When starting up as a freelance hairstylist, there will of course be a financial impact. You’ll need to invest in equipment, without a salon as a base, you’ll need everything. This is always going to be a big expense, so minimise it as much as you can by shopping the sales and using professional discount codes.

You’ll also need to be insured – Create Beautiful Hair students get a great deal with Balens! Read more about that here…

Advertising can be a big help too, when done right, but one of the best forms of advertising is having your own website with a regular blog which you can then share on social media. Google ads can also be great, but think about your competition. If you’re in London or another big city, you may find that your ads get swept away by big names. In a smaller town, you’ll have better luck.

It’s always a good idea to try and take into account your finances during down time. Put money aside, when you can, so that you are financially secure enough to weather the quieter months and at the beginning, whilst your building your client base.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”24120″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Making it Work

Do your research! Find out what similar stylists are charging – don’t go in too high but don’t under-price yourself either.

You may need to be conservative to begin with in order to attract customer but you need to make sure you’re covering your own costs. You’ll have no chance at success if you’re losing money month after month.

Think carefully about promotions you’re running. Discounts and incentives are a great way of bringing in clients but make sure the numbers work before you commit![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Making a Name for Yourself

Personal connections are everything! Social media needs to be one of your main focuses as does face to face interaction at events.

You need to have a clear and impressive online presence, so try to get clued up on how it all works. You will need be posting online regularly and with a consistent ‘theme’.

Network with other stylists. Ask clients for reviews and ‘shout outs’ online. Word of mouth is great (and free!) but can be a little slow so don’t rely on this as a means to get yourself known.

Advertise. Network. Be visible! Offer your services at events to gain access to a large target audience. Think carefully about the type of client you want to attract and focus on them. Place fliers and business cards in places you know your target market will see them.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”24146″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Building a Team

Being freelance doesn’t necessarily mean you need to go it alone completely. If you can afford it, hire someone who can help build your brand or work with others when the opportunity arises. As your work takes off, you may want to find someone help with your taxes and hire an assistant to make your day to day life easier.

It probably won’t be necessary to have a team of people at the very beginning but think about how best you can utilise the expertise of others and offer your help so you can call in those favours later![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”24130″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Finding Jobs

Don’t expect the work to come to you! Not to begin with at least. You need to get out there and hunt it down! You could consider registering with an agency who will help find you work but be careful about the associated cost. Be sure that the money the agency could bring in, covers the cost to you.

Be Brave!

It may feel like a huge risk and a scary prospect BUT think of the benefits. As long as you are savvy and do your research, you’ll likely be a success! You’ll get such job satisfaction knowing that YOU are in control. Your success will be solely down to you.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_3][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Bridal Hair & Makeup Inspiration for Autumn Weddings

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1539117291898{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]When getting into the bridal hair and makeup industry, many people assume that summer is the busiest time of year but in fact, it’s the autumn months that are often the most popular with couples and wedding planners – so don’t start winding down just yet!

Autumn is such a magical time of year to get married (and one of the most expensive times of year too!) and there is so much scope to play around with slightly ‘warmer’ bridal hair and makeup looks. Summer always sees a lot of barely there, natural makeup and tousled locks and winter is a popular time for heavier makeup and more structured styles, but autumn offers that wonderful in-between ground which gives the best of both worlds. The sun is still shining, but the weather is getting colder and hair and makeup often reflects this.

In today’s blog, we’ll be exploring some of autumns hottest looks for brides – from the most sought after colour palettes to tapping into autumnal themes.

Why not practice some of the styles we suggest, in preparation for your brides? If you need a helping hand, join our online bridal hair course for expert advice and guidance at the click of a button![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”24724″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Colour Palettes

Autumn comes with one of nature’s most vibrant colour palettes and an autumn bride might want to include this in her makeup look. Warm, bronzed contours; deep, rich red and berry lips all complete with a flawless base, of course! But as a bridal hair and makeup artist, it’s part of our job to stay on top of all the latest fashions, not just the obvious, and that includes colour schemes.

Pantone is the authority on colour for pretty much everything! Clothes, interiors and of course, makeup. The must-have colours for 2019 have already begun to surface, with collections titled ‘Cravings’ and ‘Classico’ providing a fantastic palette for autumn with lots of tempting reds and timeless neutrals. Stay ahead of the curve with your autumn brides and get playing with these gorgeous shades…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Red Pear

Red pear is an essential colour for autumn. A rich burgundy described by the experts as a ‘Deliciously deep red, whose luscious depth entices’. It’s a bold one, yes, but on the right bride this can make the most incredible lip colour. For those feeling a little less brave, keep the essence of the shade but dial it back a bit by keeping it sheer.

Cayenne is one of the most wearable colours of the season, particularly as a ‘pop’ on the apples of your bride’s cheeks for an instant health kick! The coral undertones and soft pink overtones combine to make the most, dreamy shade for most skin tones. Beautiful!

White Swan

You can probably tell from the name that this is a stunning colour for a bridal look and it’s one that is soon going to take centre stage, with many a wedding dress appearing in this warm off-white shade in 2019. Layer it up with gorgeous autumn floral tones for elegant femininity.

Chilli Pepper

A vibrant, spicy red that is possible the perfect red lip shade. This is bold but super flattering, with a luscious pink undertone. If your bride is after a striking Hollywood style  with a contemporary twist, this is the hue for you!

Cat eye flicks are always a wonderful addition to a bridal look, particularly one which nods towards vintage fashion, but black can be a little harsh for day wear and often, brown just doesn’t cut it. Enter caviar – the perfect mid black with just a hint of teal. This will really make blue eyes sparkle.

Apricot Brandy

Contouring plays a key role in autumn bridal makeup, but less is more and colours can be more flesh toned than brown. Pantone’s Apricot Brandy shade is a wonderful choice for sculpting cheekbones on fairer skin or giving a fresh apple on darker skin tones. A multi-tasker for your kit.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”22629″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Bridal Makeup

Autumn wedding makeup for brides paves way for neutral smoky eyes, lightly bronzed contours, deeply coloured lips and a hint of gold – all of which have that amazing combination of sultry and girlish. Playing ‘seasonally’ with makeup is so much fun and is a great way to spark your creativity![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”24725″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

Summer brides often opt for natural lip shades or stick to that wonderful nude pink tone that Meghan Markle wore so well on her big day, but colder months always bring those darker shades to the forefront, which us makeup artists love!

A slightly sheer plum is a favourite right now, for A/W 2018, but all those reds on the Pantone colour chart for 2019 means that timeless Hollywood red pout is seriously on the radar. If your client has the right complexion for it (usually red heads and warm brunettes), why not play around with some orange undertones too?

2018 has been a year for the new lighter smoky eye, featuring greys instead of neutrals but both are big for autumn and heading into 2019. Eye makeup always depends largely on the rest of the face though, particularly the lip. If you’re making the most of those bold, red shades then you could always try out a more delicate eye – a subtle gloss on the lid, a precise cat eye flick and sky-high lashes (with a bit of help from false individuals set in!).

Whatever the weather, a healthy glow is a must! But this doesn’t mean you have to go without that autumnal contouring. Pale skin can look fabulous kept really clear with a pink flush, just like on a brisk winter’s day but we also love a bit of bronze in cooler months, especially on warm skin tones – but easy does it! We still want this looking quite natural, not overdone.

Eyebrows should never be forgotten. These are the frame of the face and when they’re not done, the whole look is incomplete. Autumn brides are looking amazing with a strong brow, but it’s important to remember that eyebrows are such a personal thing, so go with what your bride loves. Whatever look you decide on though, well-groomed and defined is essential![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Embed from Getty Images[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Autumnal Bridal Hair

A bride’s hairstyle comes down to so many things, so going purely by the seasons is not something you can really do, but you can certainly be inspired by what seems to be more popular with autumn brides.

Still relaxed, but with a little more refinement than your typical summer styles. This beautiful style worn by Hailey Baldwin is a great place to start![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Hailey Baldwin Hair How-to

This is a fabulous textured low bun hair style, so first thing’s first: get some texture into the hair with mouse and salt spray
Next, curl – using your tongs or straighteners – using just a little bit of Silhouette prep and prime or Osis soft glam prep prime spray. Spritz each section lightly just before you get any heat on the hair for a lovely shine.
Once everything is prepped, loosen the curls softly with your fingers before picking up sections from the front. Using the twist and pull technique, bring each section back and secure using a strong hold bobby pin. These are Pam’s favourites – they don’t move anywhere! You can get them from Salon services.
Keep bringing hair back and twisting and securing until you are happy with how it looks at the front then finally, pick up all the hair at the back, create a quick easy braid with all the hair, loosen, twist and secure into a fabulous low bun – e voila!

Trouble Shooting

Avoid flyaways by gently spritzing the hair with the prep and prime spay as you go along  BUT avoid ‘wetting’ the hair – just light mists of product are enough. Try to not be too close to the hair when you spray or you will make the hair wet. . . and wet = hard, crispy hair – not nice![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_3][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

6 Easy Ways to Make Your Instagram Blow Up

6 Easy Ways to Make Your Instagram Blow Up

As a make-up artist and bridal hairstylist, winning at Instagram is one of the best ways to get your work seen.

Free, global and simple! You can reach an audience that you would never usually have access to. But how do you stand out? How do you get YOUR grid noticed? We’re going to share with you 6 easy ways you can make your Instagram blow up.

The easiest way to get your Instagram noticed is by reaching out to like-minded accounts. Follow, like and comment. By engaging with accounts similar to yours, by responding to comments left on their post, you’ll likely find that your follower count will steadily rise.

Don’t waste your time chasing followers that aren’t into what your account is about – although it’s great to have lots of followers, engagement is much more important. Make sure you target people that will want to see what you’re offering and who will like your posts.

Contact bloggers and well-known Instagrammers from your local area and offer them a free hairstyle or makeover in return for photos being shared on their feed. If you can get an endorsement from someone with a ton of followers, you’re sure to see you account explode!

Reach out to local wedding planners/venues – remember, to be successful concentrate on networking with people who are relevant! The more you participate in the Instagram world, the more human your account will feel.

It’s all well and good networking, but to make people want to follow you, you have to stand out! Go bold with the styles you post, throw in some out of the box ideas and only ever showcase your best work.

Always consider the way you’re presenting your posts as a whole. Don’t just think about the posts as individual images, think about your grid more as an overall album. Choose a theme, stick to similar filters and create flow with a colour palette. You want an image you post to be instantly recognisable as yours with a signature look.

Keeping a signature look going throughout your feed will give your account fluidity and integrity. You are showcasing your creativity with your hair and make up styles, so let your Instagram reflect this.

Try and trigger and emotional response with your post if you really want to connect by sharing news and asking for feedback. It’s all about engagement.

Whether or not the world of hashtags is new to you, it is important to know that there is a clever way to use them!

Pick carefully. Don’t use hashtags that are too common otherwise you’ll find your posts are getting lost amongst hundreds of other posts. Use relevant tags and use them sparingly, for example, if you’ve been at an event like a wedding fair use a hashtag to connect with others who also attended. Tag in the organisers or the venue. You’ll find that people who saw you at the event will be reminded of your work.

You can also use hashtags to mention great products you’re using as another great way to bring like-minded traffic to your page.

Regularly search hashtags to stay up to date and on trend. You may discover a thread you weren’t aware of which will open up a whole new group of followers!

Make sure you post regularly, but don’t go crazy and spam the feed. If you don’t post often enough, your followers will lose touch but if you post too often, they’ll get fed up and may unfollow. It’s all about balance.

Posting once or twice a day is great but always quality over quantity! It’s also a good idea to be consistent with the types of posts you put out. If you only ever post photos of your work but then throw in a photo of your avocado on toast, you risk confusing your brand. Think about the image you want to create, and stick to it.

Keep your aesthetic at the core. You want it to be obvious what your account is ‘promoting’ without selling – you want your audience to quickly connect with your content and know right away that they love what you’re doing enough to follow!

Think about the time you post. Posts uploaded in the early hours are likely to be missed, so consider when your target audience is most likely to be scrolling through their feed and then go for it!

Collaborate with similar accounts and give them a shoutout for one in return. If you have a similar audience, you’ll find that their followers will soon become your followers too!

Be sure to ‘promote’ accounts you genuinely like and feel your audience will too. Don’t risk alienating your followers with random shout outs or shout outs to users who don’t have the same ethics are you.

If you already have a following on Facebook or Twitter remember to promote your Instagram there too. You’ll likely gain a small following of friends and family to get you started.

Don’t be shy in asking them to share your account with their friends and family. They’ll be happy to help and its free publicity! Speak to brides you’ve worked with and ask for a mention in one of their posted wedding photos – this is another great way to get your work seen, particularly by prospective clients.

Your username is more important than you might think. This must represent who you are and what you do, so people get the idea at a glance, but at the same time it must be interesting enough to make them take notice among all the others.

If you want to invest a little money into promoting yourself, you can use Instagram to help you get extra followers or engagement. Simple to set up and with the option to set a budget, you don’t have to worry about expensive advertising costs. By following those 6 easy tips you’ll be sure to become a successful instagrammer!

Read our blog How to Take Instagram Worthy Photos for more amazing tips!

Once you’ve built up a following, you want to do everything in your power to keep them! Other than all the tips above, the work you choose to feature is just as important. Try to keep your feed full of photographs that really show off your skills. Every single image counts – think of it like a shop window, or a portfolio. One dud image can put potential clients right off.

Other than being great at what you do by training with us here at Create Beautiful Hair, the best way to grab attention and keep it is to display beautiful looks that are hot right now and trending.

To inspire you, we’ve put together a list of Instagram worthy hair and make-up ideas you can play around with to really take your feed to the next level!

Yes, kind of weird, but ‘Hair Hoops’ are huge this summer. Metallic everything is back in a big way again this season, so this is unusual way to add accessories to a look is a unique take on bringing some extra stand-out shine to your bride.

Be creative and experiment with different sized rings and different colours to find a look to suit your bride. This is a very bold look so you need to choose the right sort of bride, but paired with a beautiful braid, it would a be mind-blowing bridal look!

It can be tempting to play it safe with hair colour for a wedding day, but beautifully soft pastel hair can look incredible with the simplicity of a white dress. Pastel pink, pale purple, mint and cool grey could be just what your bride needs to make her feel like the star of the show. For the alternative bride, why not suggest some hair chalks at the trial?

Nervous about trial runs? Find out how to ace them here.

Now, this may work best for a wedding themed shoot rather than for an actual wedding day, but to really get people talking about your work go super edgy with a graffiti lip. You can keep it fairly subtle and opt for a rainbow design or go full wedding day extreme and have ‘I do’ written on the lips.

Another Instagram favourite is face glitter – you can keep it subtle or go completely over the top. If your bride has opted for a festival-style wedding then you could definitely make it work. Or think about a second look for the evening – a super fun way to go from ceremony to reception! Be true to your brand and keep your loyal followers interested. A strong Instagram following can be life changing for a small business. Be brave. Be bold. Be different!

Keep Your Cool! Our Tips for Avoiding Over-heating on the Job

We hope you lovely lot are all out there enjoying this gorgeous summer sunshine as much as you can! But even if you’re working away, don’t forget to keep up with your self-care to keep yourself healthy and well in the heat.

So much of what we do as bridal hair and makeup artists concerns how the bride is doing and so it’s not uncommon that our own needs fall by the wayside as we’re staying on top of everything else. However, when it’s hot, you must take extra care to look after yourself – an ill bridal hair and makeup artist is not a good one and as a self-employed person, as so many of us are, we can’t afford to take days off to get better! Prevention is the best medicine, so during these summer months when things get hot on the job, be sure to follow these top tips to stay on your A game…

Summer Brides Wedding Hair and Make Up Inspiration 2018

Summer Brides Wedding Hair and Make Up Inspiration 2018

We’re in the midst of wedding season which means an influx of summer brides wanting the perfect hair and make up for their Big Day and it’s our job, as the experts, to help them make the right choice.

Your bride will want to feel confident, comfortable and beautiful and her hair and makeup will go a long way in achieving that. There are many things to consider when helping her choose the final look and while the style of hair and make up needs to fit the feel of the wedding it also needs to be true to the bride’s natural style. She will want to look like the best version of herself and look great in all the wedding photos too, so you’ve got to create the best of both worlds! Even if she wants a natural style, it has to be defined enough to work on camera.

Experimentation at the trial run is key to finding a look they love and they may even end up opting for a style they would never have considered before! So listen to what they want, try it out, but don’t be afraid to offer your opinion too. It’s important that you find out where they’re getting married, the style of dress, details they want to show off, what they consider their best feature and parts they may want to hide to help you figure out a look they’ll love. Don’t push it though. At the end of the day, remember that they are the star of the show, so don’t overrun their ideas if it’s something they really want. It’s your job to make them feel a million dollars!

The last thing summer brides want to worry about on their wedding day is overheating! So a high bun can work as a fab suggestion for a summer bride that will keep her feeling fresh all day long.

Whether your bride wants an elegant style or a more relaxed vibe – you can style it to suit either. Top knots high on the head are great if your bride has a backless dress or detail she wants exposed. If your bride is on the shorter side, they add height and lengthen the neck – super flattering.

If your bride is having a hazy summer wedding and wants to look beautifully relaxed, this is a lovely style of up-do to suggest, but be aware that these relaxed and ‘effortless’ styles actually take a fair bit of work to get spot on and make stay in place, so be sure you’re well practised.

Allowing a few delicate strands to fall loose, gently framing the face, adds to this soft, romantic look.

Incorporate real flowers as your bride’s accessory (affordable and beautiful! Have them ask their florist to wire the blooms for ease of use) or keep it all-natural.

This look is so versatile and can be kept neat or truly messy whilst still looking stunningly summery. Cleverly placed pins using Pam’s ‘up and over technique’ make this look achievable for all hair types.

Sign up to our online course to learn how to secure your styles like a pro!

If your bride wants to keep her hair off her face but still have the hair down look, this is the look to suggest. It can be chilled and relaxed like the up-do or super intricate. If your bride is undecided, give her an up-do that can be un-pinned for a fresh night time look! She can dance the night away with a whole new style.

Get to know your bride, if she spends her life with her hair down, she won’t thank you for pulling her hair into an up-do. Curls and waves are the perfect style, she can have beautiful wedding hair whilst feeling like herself. Defined Hollywood waves or loose, natural curls – you can make this style suit any bride.

I’m sure you’ve been asked a million times for Boho braids, they really are a true wedding classic. They’re effortlessly chic and on a hot day, they’ll keep the bride looking and feeling cool! The best thing about braids is that they suit all hair types – long, short, straight and curly. You’re unlikely to have to tell a bride that this won’t work for them!

Keep them loose, romantic and soft or give them edge by keeping them structured. Deconstructed plaits are the BIG thing this summer – perfect for adding flowers or other adornments. You can really give your bride an extra something with a expertly placed accessory. Another selling point is the gorgeous waves your bride will be left with once they’re removed so she can go off on her honeymoon looking great with zero effort.

Braid Like A Pro!

Another wedding classic and ideal for a summer wedding. Liaise with your bride and her florist to choose flowers that match her bouquet, to help tie the whole wedding theme together, or pick a few wild flowers for a personal touch. The great thing about flower crowns is that they can completely transform any style and create many different looks. Understated or big and bold, this is the perfect summer brides wedding accessory.

One of the best styles for keeping hair off the brides face and neck and one that will last all day and night, when done right! As with other styles, your bride’s crown braid can be as neat as you want or completely deconstructed. You can in as many accessories as your bride wants or can be kept beautifully simple. Leave curls cascading and combine it with a crown braid on top for a twist on the half up/half down style. So many options mean you’ll keep any type of bride happy!

Beautiful Makeup for Summer Brides…

Get Your Summer Bridal Makeup Down…

Summer brides need a lovely, natural glow but they are often worried that they will need a  heavy face of make up on a hot day to achieve that, if their skin is anything less than perfect.

Fortunately, a buildable, tinted moisturiser offers a light alternative with coverage. If your bride wants to look organic, let those freckles show, a la Meghan Markle! Natural and flawless. With a little skill, it is possible to achieve the same look with a full foundation. Your bride can be reassured that she can look light and effortless while feeling comfortable with a heavier coverage.

With cleverly and carefully applied bronzer in all the right places, you can make your bride look sun-kissed. Add contour and highlight, but in moderation and blend, blend, blend! Less is more with this look. If your bride has chosen a high bun or top knot, this makeup look will keep her looking elegant and radiant.

Make your summer brides glow for her wedding day. Dewy makeup keeps your bride fresh-faced and looking like the best version of herself. If your bride doesn’t usually wear lots of make up, a dewy face can help her feel comfortable while still looking like a goddess. Select make up that’ll keep her glowing all day so she won’t loose her shine.

Another great look for a bride who doesn’t wear much make up or is worried about heaviness. Great for a casual wedding or if your bride is opting for a bold, detailed hairstyle. Make her skin your focus, you want a beautiful base and natural eye colours to compliment her eye colour. Don’t feel you need to avoid fake lashes, individual lashes can look very real whilst still adding that something extra. Make your bride looks like she’s radiating love and happiness.

This look really needs your expertise – be sure you help your bride select a shade that flatters her skin. A bright lip can add a pop of colour without having to go overboard with the makeup. With the right choice, it can suit any bride, age doesn’t need to be an issue. A bold lip can be a great look for a mature bride.

The classic smoky eye is a wedding staple but for a summer wedding, add a little twist! If you have a brave bride – go ALL out. If she’s a little more hesitant but still wants to introduce come colour, suggest a coloured eye-liner.

Light pinks, barely-there nudes and rosy cheeks create a beautifully, uncomplicated ethereal look. It is the ultimate summer wedding look. Boho-braids are a perfect match. A dash of highlighter in the inner eye add a real pop while keeping the whole look effortless.

How To Create Meghan Markle’s Bridal Hair Style

How To Create Meghan Markle’s Bridal Hair Style

Meghan and Harry may be settling in to their life together as a married couple, but we’re still thinking about that gorgeous wedding day look and we’re willing to bet that many brides-to-be all over the world will be too, for a very long time.

When a wedding a huge as this one hits our media, it’s up to us as bridal hairstylists and bridal makeup artists to be on the ball and have that look figured out to a tee, so when a bride asks you for something just like it (and at least one bride will ask you for something just like it, at some point!) you’ll be confident and raring to go.

We covered Meghan’s beautiful, barely-there makeup in a previous blog and today, we’re looking at that effortless hairdo. Soft, face-framing and ‘very girl next door’ with all the grace and sophistication expected of a Duchess – this is one style that we’re absolutely loving! As demonstrated, despite its casual air, it fits like a dream into a regal, cathedral setting but it would look equally appropriate at a laid back barn or back garden affair too.

The trick to achieving a look like this is not so much it getting the hair to look the way you want it, but rather, getting it to stay that way! Deliberately falling tendrils and a loose appearance takes some serious skill to style in way that keeps it looking just as fabulous by the end of the night as it does when the bride walks down the aisle.

On our 2 Day Bridal Hair Course, we make sure to take our students through everything they need to know on proper securing and more often than not, even those who have been in the industry for years come away having learned need-to-know tips on creating the perfect foundations for a style, which Pam has developed during her 30 years as an award-winning bridal hairstylist.

Can’t make it to a course? Don’t worry! Pam has also put together in-depth tutorials as part of her online course taking you through these essential points step-by-step.

To discover how to create the look faultlessly, with all the little expert tricks and tips you need to make your style really stand out from the crowd, sign up to our online course or book onto one of our 2 day or 4 day bridal hair courses today!

To get you started though, here are the basics:

  1. To begin the style, you need to prep the base. For this you have two options: a glossy, bouncy blow dry (this is what Meghans hairstylist went for) or set the hair in heated rollers for lift and volume.
  2. Part the hair in the centre using your tail comb and pull back to the crown.
  3. Next, you want to add some loose waves through the hair using large barrel tongs (32mm). Make sure to wrap the hair loosely and alternate the direction to keep the curls looking natural and relaxed.
  4. Once you’ve achieved the desired movement and texture, pull the hair back into a tight, low ponytail at the nape of the head. Fix with hairspray.
  5. Twist sections of the hair around the ponytail to create the low bun. Loosely wrap these sections around the ponytail to create the voluminous undone bun.
  6. Finish by loosening up sections around the face for a really soft effect. Finish with your Elnett Professional hairspray.

Get The Look: The EXACT products used to create Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding Makeup

With all that build up it’s hard to believe that the Royal Wedding has now been and gone! After much anticipation, Meghan Markle made her way down the aisle looking every inch as fabulous as expected and, much to our great delight, wearing pretty much exactly what Pam Wrigley said she would create for her wedding hair and makeup. Nailed it!

Whatever look she showed up sporting, it was always going to be the number one hot trend for brides to be all over the world for the foreseeable future, so just as well that it’s one we love. Her makeup was fresh and dewy, allowing those beautiful freckles to shine through and her hair (despite the complaints about a few stray fly-aways breaking the internet) was a glammed up version of her signature messy low bun.

We know you’ll all be dying to learn how to create Meghan’s Royal Wedding style and it’s just as well, because you’re going to have to be a dab hand at it with all the requests you’re going to receive to copy the look! You can go through it all step-by-step on our online bridal hair course, with loads of invaluable expert tips thrown in (you won’t see any fly-aways on OUR brides!), or come along to one of our 2 day or 4 day courses to really get to grips with it all through intensive hands-on learning.

Until you sign up to our online bridal hair course or book onto one of our 2 or 4 day bridal hair and bridal makeup courses though, we’ve got you covered with the exact makeup products Daniel Martin used and a few top tips on how to recreate the look.

In today’s blog we’re covering Meghan’s makeup. Keep checking back for how to create that gorgeous hairstyle!
