Keep Your Cool! Our Tips for Avoiding Over-heating on the Job
We hope you lovely lot are all out there enjoying this gorgeous summer sunshine as much as you can! But even if you’re working away, don’t forget to keep up with your self-care to keep yourself healthy and well in the heat.
So much of what we do as bridal hair and makeup artists concerns how the bride is doing and so it’s not uncommon that our own needs fall by the wayside as we’re staying on top of everything else. However, when it’s hot, you must take extra care to look after yourself – an ill bridal hair and makeup artist is not a good one and as a self-employed person, as so many of us are, we can’t afford to take days off to get better! Prevention is the best medicine, so during these summer months when things get hot on the job, be sure to follow these top tips to stay on your A game…
Making sure that you drink plenty of water is essential on hot days, whether you’re working or not. Sugary drinks, juice and caffeine will actually dehydrate you further, so stick to water as much as possible.
Keep a bottle with you at all times (and be good to the environment while you’re at it by investing in a snazzy refillable flask rather than plastic, throwaway bottles!), particularly if you are traveling on crowded public transport. We’ve all seen the signs at tube stations! Take heed.
Not a fan of drinking plain old water? Buy a bag of frozen strawberries to keep in the freezer and pop a couple into your flask before you head out. This will both keep your drink refreshingly cool and subtly flavour it. Yum!
Remember to Eat
Heat is quite a good appetite suppressant, as is busy super-busy, so combine the two and you may find yourself dizzy and sick with hunger before you remember to eat. Don’t let this happen – you need to keep your strength and energy levels up, as being a bridal hair and makeup can be demanding! Early starts, potentially long hours, and not to mention to huge amount of positive, up beat energy that the bridal party will want you to bring to the day.
If you know you’re not likely to get the chance to sit down and eat a meal, bring some healthy snacks (that aren’t likely to melt!) to nibble on the go.
Dressing for the job is a big part of being a bridal hair and makeup artist – you’re probably going to end up in a wedding photo album or two, so you want to look professional, well kept but also not too bold! The bride wants all eyes on her – even in photographs! But when it’s very hot, sometimes your usual outfits might be a bit heavy.
If you’ve not got much in the way of smart summer clothes, treat yourself to a few bits and pieces. Some simple black t-shirts and vests are a must. How about a black, maxi racer back dress? Consider your comfort as well as how you look.
